One of the largest size and best-executed of the First Gear diecast 1:34 scale trucks is the 1953 Kenworth Bullnose COE (cab-over-engine) truck, offered by First Gear chiefly as an “18-wheeler” tractor and van trailer and as a three-axle heavy tow truck. Each of the two versions comes in a wide variety of colors and logos. Many of the tractor and trailer models are painted with the graphics for “fallen flag” carriers who no longer exist after the 1980 deregulation. Unfortunately, First Gear issued too many of both the tractor and trailer and tow truck models with First Gear or Kenworth markings which are not historical and consequently those models have lesser value. The Kenworth Bullnose model is beautifully finished and detailed. It is the Kenworth model 523 which was produced from 1948 to 1956. This truck is cab over engine but is not a tilt cab, the engine was serviced by opening panels in front of the truck and by removing the “doghouse” engine cover inside the cab. Cabovers were designed to tow a 40-foot trailer within the 65-foot overall length limit that prevailed until 1976. The Kenworth Bullnose was an early cabover design with a short wide snout, a design also used by Peterbilt and Freightliner during the period, and superseded by flat-front tilting cabs in all the makes. Kenworth Bullnose’s were almost universally powered by Cummins 6-cylinder diesel engines, and the single exhaust stack of the First Gear model is especially indicative of the Cummins diesel engine.Read full review
