The Tech 6 operates as a normal DC power pack. It is also a sound controller that can operate all the sounds in your loco if it contains an N.M.R.A. DCC sound decoder. The Tech 6 has two modes of operation. Standard DC for non-decoder equipped locos - OR - Dual for DCC (NMRA compatible) sound and non-sound equipped locos Operate either Standard Analog DC / Blue Line locos, or fully functional dual-mode sound decoder-equipped locos, or any DCC decoder equipped loco.

Perfect for a small layout
This is perfect for a small layout with a mixture of dc and dcc equipped locomotives. As is, it can control 1 engine. With the add on handheld unit it can handle 6. Initially bought mine so I could turned down the volume of the engines and activate features, discovered the joy of programming acceleration and deaccelration and playing with sound effects. It’s perfect for my needs.

Works nicely on DC with DCC sound locomotives. BUT--No on/off switch?? No emergency stop?? I'd consider these to be vital features.

It does what it says it will do.
The box did not look new, but everything inside appeared brand new. After hooking it up, I am now able to run my old DC frame motor locos, and also, my DCC sound equiped locos. Only drawback I see is that I will have to reset the decoders before running on our club's DCC layout. I am happy with this purchase.

Great controller and a great value at $60. Only gave it 4 stars because it lacks an emergency stop and a power on/off switch. The companion hand held controller does have an emergency stop but no on/off switch also.
