One of my favorite animes
I've been watching anime since the 90s and this is definitely in my top 5. It turns the Magical Girl genre on its head by dealing with what the actual consequences of that sort of thing would probably look like. It can definitely be dark in places, but I really find it to be a beautiful story of the power of friendship, hope, and love (all sorts of love, not just, or even mainly, the romantic type). I can't say much more without spoiling, and a first viewing really is at its most effective without spoilers. That said, it definitely rewards rewatching, too. (I should note that the version I got didn't have any special features, but since I don't own many anime series on DVD, I'm not sure how common that is. Just something to note if you're looking for a DVD that does have special features included.)
