Never check any electrical device with it plugged in.. that having been said looking back and forth at a meter while checking points for continuity, you can easily miss a spot you need to be, or get the wrong spot ...these make a wonderful audible device you dont have to glance anywhere except directly where you need to be looking. I bought a 9 volt battery carrier and with an old jumper wire cut in half and some hot melt glue, i have a real assistant that loudly lets me know either i have a connection or silence lets me know that i have a bad fuse.your time is worth the $2, for the whole cost.
