This is one of the first Kindle Fire as these went all the way up to 10. This is the second generation which has 8gb of storage, but does not have a option for a micro sd card to expand the storage space. Given that, you can have a lot of books in your library, particularly if you use a program like Calibre which even converts epub or pdf to the Kindle mobi version. It is a good idea to keep your apps limited and use them on a laptop or tablet as they can eat up storage space. The Kindle uses it's own web browser, but you can switch to one of your choice like Chrome or other. In reading books on this device, I switched to a black background and larger text as that is easier for me, particularly for reading when in a unlit area. I have not tried to use the device out in the sun, but I would probably stick toi a dark page with white font. The device is heavier than my Barnes and Noble Nook, but I find it does not crash as often as the Nook HD; however, my Nook is quite old which is why I wanted to get an older kindle just to test the product out. I find that I like it so much I am planning on getting a newer version and gifting this device to someone who cannot pay for a Kindle and give them some of my books on it as well. I do recommend a Kindle and if you have to get an older model, such as this Kindle Fire, you will be pleased with your purchase.Read full review

1st generation is not as speedy and glossy as the newer 5th generation, but for what it is this device is excellent. And it's not expensive to get the port fixed like in the case of my purchase. A few extra dollars fixed it. Overall a good device for a book reader, but I would not use the 1st generation for a tablet.

amazing, I bought this for my wife who wanted a i pad but I could not afford to buy the i pad, so I started looking for a less expensive version. she just wanted a tablet platform that she could play her facebook games on and download the popular apps she wanted. at first this was discouraging as we bought multiple tablets and had to return them because either the android opperating system wouldnt play the games or some crazy platforms set up. finally we decided to give the kindle fire a shot, our last hope & when we got it we were impressed by the style of the kindle fire and the crystal clear touch screen it boasts. the gingerbread platform is easy to use and understand for the most part, the games play for the most part the only issue we have found is activating flash for one game. other than that we appreciate the fact that amazon or kindle fire has created a great tablet at a price someone can afford!!!!!! thx oh & if kindle is interested i believe my wife has come up with a good commercial for you ,Read full review
This is the first generation model of the Amazon Kindle Fire and since then, a lot has changed. What I loved about this model (compared to my Kindle Touch) is that it has a backlight (and I can read without the need of a light source), it has really good graphics and color, it is quite fast and it is organized for my own leisure. I also liked the way the page flips as if its a book, the way files are displayed (very friendly), the parental controls and the available free apps and games in the Kindle Store. What I don't like, however, is it is pretty heavy compared to my Kindle Touch or any other device I've had (apple products). The memory allocation is also too little as about 1 gb is allotted for apps and the rest is for books and other files. The limitation of having to purchase directly from Amazon is also a bummer, not to add the fact that there are not a lot, but of course it makes sense. I know I can purchase via the android market but then again, not all apps are kindle fire friendly and I am not going to risk it. I haven't tried to sync it via PC because I never had to with other devices. I manage everything online or through the web. Another bad point is there are times that apps or the browser crash or reset on their own - which is terrible, but then again, I don't expect to be able to do so much anyway. The device is pretty good as an ereader but anything else - not yet. Perhaps the latter models are a bit better, and perhaps with more time, this will pick up and more models are going to be available.Read full review
First off, I would like to say I got a very good deal on this leading me to purchase it sooner than I would have. That having been said, this is just the greatest little gadget little old retired me could have. I bought this primarily to use in the kitchen both for my entertainment while preparing lengthy meals as well as to use for recipes and other food prep and store instructions. I had tried using my laptop, but it was just too large to be of any real convenience. My Kindle Fire has become invaluable to me as an instant go to resource to keep handy as the perfect size on my counter as I work. I love the versatility it offers as I cook to seek extra instructions, listen to a book or finish a movie I had previously started. I plan to use it alongside my sewing and craft activities as well for personal online instructions as I work. What more could one possibly ask of a device such as this? The battery lasts a long time and takes me through any recipe, craft or sewing project I might need it for. Otherwise, I just plug it in at my counter or work space. The Kindle Fire just does anything you might want from instant instructions and tutoring to checking and returning email and browsing the internet. All wrapped up in a convenient 7" screen size. The only problem I've had is in creating messages for returning emails, but I believe that to be a glitch in the Gmail App and the screen can be a bit touchy. You would definitely not be disappointed in this as a purchase. I've found absolutely nothing not to like about it so far. :)Read full review
I bought this used as a first tablet for my son. I didn't realize that it had no camera. I didn't realize that any apps or games you buy for the kindle must be purchased through the kindle app store. Google Play gift cards do not work - even though it is an Android device. So we have $55 in gift cards we can't use. Otherwise, it seems to be a good tablet. Customer support is GREAT! The charger quit working. After patiently working with me to determine the problem, they sent us a new charger and power boost adapter free of charge.
My Kindle Fire crashed recently after about three years of careful use (AV software, etc.), and no one, including Amazon tech support, could put Humpty Dumpty back together again. It's too bad, because when you've spent many hours customizing your Kindle (adding apps to an app organizer, books to a Bookshelf app, contacts, media playlists, etc.), utter breakdown is no small annoyance. You're desperate to get it back up and running, and the fact that your raw apps are on the cloud is little comfort. Amazon tech support advised me that a Kindle Fire cannot be repaired. They offered to ship me a newer HD model ("only $89") provided I return the broken Fire to them postpaid so that they can refurbish it and resell it. What? Why not refurbish my Kindle for a nominal fee, and return it to me? I asked. That's not an option, came the reply. And what is the warranty period on the $89 replacement? Same as on the Kindle Fire, one year, I was told. Refurbished Kindle Fires are all over eBay; Amazon wants mine to be one of them! I did not volunteer though. One repairman, who claims he can repair a Kindle Fire for about $100, was surprised to learn that I had had my Kindle Fire for three years. The average life of a Kindle Fire, he claimed, was 18 months. The store where I bought my Kindle Fire refuses to repair a Fire once it is out of warranty. I was told that's because the company is under contract with Amazon never to repair any Kindle Fire once the warranty has expired, even though they know how to do so! That deal with Amazon obviously is intended to promote sales of newer Kindle models. Amazon, creator of this classical planned obsolescence scheme, doesn't offer you the buyer any reasonable options when your Kindle breaks down. Instead, they see your frustration and dependency on their apps as an opportunity to exploit you. I'll avoid Kindle in the future. An iPad is better engineered, can be repaired, and is a far better value.Read full review
I love my new kindle. It is pre-owned but for what I use it for which is mostly reading, maybe a quick look at Facebook it is great. I guess the new one's are better but this one could not be better to me. Keyboard types great, much better than the HP Touch pad and as good if not better than the iPad. Apps load and work great, Facebook, Words With Friends and the Weather Channel loaded fast and work quickly. I don't need a bunch of memory as I have Amazon cloud and everything is available to me from there, all my books and music, also have Google docs so I just can use those too. And I can take it where ever I go. I bought a screen protector on Ebay. My friend gave me a leather cover. I bought a whole set of pens for under $5. I also bought the stand to prop it up on. I got this money for starting a new bank account and I do have to leave the money there for six months but I need to save anyway. So I got way more than the Kindle cost so I got it and all the accessories for free. I love my new Kindle Fire. It is just right for me. The hardware itself is solid and has a quality feel. The screen is fantastic (for an LCD screen) with good brightness and excellent color, and a very wide viewing angle. I use my fire to look up the price of things on Ebay when I am out buying, I use it to answer Email, play a game. It excels at all these tasks. As as reader it is top notch. And Amazon gives me free books a lot of them are really good. I would buy a used Kindle again on Ebay probably will buy a newer version. If this seller is selling a newer version he has my business.Read full review
This is actually my first kindle. The longevity of battery life was just days, even for a week. I don't use it too often, but when I do, the battery life is just great! I can play music, and read any ebook I buy or rent. However, you only get wifi at certain places, or all places, depending which cafe will have wifi (like StarBucks). I have wifi at my own place, so it's good (I don't normally take it out too often). So, get this! it's cheap, and worth the price!

Good unit, i use it for Bible study. The only feature I don't like is the favorites presentation in the middle of the screen. Why not just treat everything as a screen of icons that re easy to manipulate. It works well and the battery life is decent. Applications abound. So far I have bought two units, one for me and one for my wife so you can see that for the most part, I like it.
