Like all Estwing products, this tomahawk/axe/hatchet is premium, made in U.S.A. top quality, on par with their legendary hammers and general purpose axes. While suitable for light woodsman/camping chores, this is in all reality a serious weapon - the sharp, 2 1/2" cutting edge is upswept and the poll is a tapered point "skull punch". it is a full tang, forged (no welds) carbon steel implement - this is a fighting tomahawk, no holds barred, period, full stop. It goes in your car alongside your seat (better have a concealed carry permit - you can't explain this baby away like you could a T-ball bat, fish billy, or camper's hatchet!) or in your bug-out bag. It is well-balanced (not too light, not too heavy) and probably could be thrown, but this could put the excellent rubber handle in danger of being damaged - don't think Estwing intended it to be a throwing tomahawk. I don't intend to try throwing it as it is too nice a tool to put to this abuse. Comes with a very robust, riveted semi-stiff woven nylon sheath; two snaps secure the two retaining straps - undoing the snaps allows the tomahawk to be quickly deployed from the bottom of the sheath, vice the usual method of drawing it out head-first from the top. I would like to see Estwing make a similar model with a hammer poll, vice the skull punch; this would add additional utility and make it less "aggressive looking" to LE personnel - if you had this in your car and were good with words, you might argue it was a "lightweight carpenter's axe" because of the hammer poll. A small diameter (3/4") hammer poll would be just as devastating in a strike as a pointed poll, plus is less visually "threatening" and has more utility in a survival role. Also, Estwing should make the sheath Molle compatible so it could be attached to a military-style backpack; as issued, the sheath has a simple belt loop for attaching the tomahawk to a belt. Bottom line, this thing is hands down more lethal and durable than any of the Chinese versions you see on the Internet. If they had this around when Natty Bumpo ("Hawkeye") was busting brush with the Last of the Mohicans, this is the tomahawk he would have carried. It's pricey (close to $40 at Home Depot), but if you look, you can find good deals on Ebay. Highly recommend this tomahawk - I bought two.Read full review

Can't go wrong with an Estwing product. I've had their hammers for decades. All one piece forging. Great shock absorbing molded handle. All from an old American company.

Estwing makes good stuff, I have never broken a rock hammer from them. I can't comment on the value of this for a prepper, but I purchased for use in extraction. It will work for log bucking.
