Point of Impact is the first Bob Lee Swagger story in Stephen Hunter's series. Dirty White Boys is the second book in the series, although it appears to have nothing to do with Bob Lee Swagger. It is the gritty tale of Bud Pewtie, an Oklahoma State Trooper of uncommon toughness and determination who suffers from the Hunter malady that all of his male characters possess. There is a small reference in DWB that makes you wonder about its relationship to Point of Impact and Bob Lee Swagger. DWB is an outstanding action story on its own. You will think about and remember Bud Pewtie for a very long time. When you read Black Light, the third book in publication order, you will be absolutely shocked and approvingly pleased to see how amazingly Stephen Hunter ties together PoI and DWB and how closely their characters interwined when you initially thought they had nothing to do with each other. Then, when you read the subsequent Bob Lee Swagger and Earl Swagger novels, characters from Dirty White Boys will continue to show up in stunning fashion. You will marvel at how good of a chess player Hunter's writing actually is. By this, I mean that you first think a character is pretty interesting and you believe you know how that character fits into the story you are reading. But in the next book, you can't believe Hunter thinks so far ahead (like a chess player, planning 2, 3, even 4 books ahead) that you keep seeing the same wonderful characters in different settings...or even different time frames. Hunter's books jump from modern day with Pewtie and Bob Lee back to WWII and the 1950's with Bob Lee's father Earl. It's so cool to read about characters you knew from the 1990's as old men, only to read about them as young men 40 years before.
