A very fine axe for camping or general use around your property. The head is a good design and hones a fine edge that lasts through a days work. The handle is an excellent grade of hickory, though the lacquer finish is hard on the hands and should be removed to prevent blisters. If you shave off the lacquer and apply several coats of boiled linseed oil, the handle is smooth and soft and easy on the hands. The handle is as good as almost any available. The grain is properly oriented and without defects. The head is attached to the handle with 2 circular wedges that should keep the head attached perfectly through the life of the handle. This axe costs about 20-30% of any axe even remotely similar to it. In my opinion it is the best value in a medium size axe available in the world-wide marketplace. While it is does not have a hand forged one-of-a-kind head, it is a beautiful, high-quality axe that you will use with pride for years to come. You'll need to add a sheath, and Helko Werth makes one that fits it beautifully for about 25 bucks. In total its a fine package that you will be proud to own. Read full review

First off shipping was crazy fast, but that has nothing to do with the product. So here we go, the handle was perfectly seated and wood wedged with two cylinder style metal wedges also drove in. The grain of the American hickory was more then acceptable. I have seen axes at over twice the cost of this one with poor sub quality handles. Had a very light coating of laquire which i stripped off rather easy with a card scrapper, and coated in BLSO. Now on to the head of the axe. High carbon drop forged stell, nice shape design also. However you couldnt cut a piece of pine with it. Took my file to it and gave it a good 22° angle and knocked off the damn laquire. Then used my three piece Arkansas stones to fine hone a crazy sharpe edge, and finally taking the edge over the barber strap. Now it literally will shave the hair off my arm, even after tearing through a piece of knotty pine. Excellent product from Cold Steel, for a super affordable price tag.Read full review

I have been looking for this style of ax for awhile. This Trail Boss fits the bill. I am using this ax/hatchet as a camping tool and light ax work around the house. It's light enough not to wear you out after using it. Nor is too light for some medium ax work. The ax came very sharp and was ready to go the minute I received it. For the price I am very pleased with the tool and would recommend the ax to other people who need a medium to light weight ax.

With a two pound axe head with a 26" handle this axe is handy and easy to control. The edge of the blade was sharp as received but could always be improved . Found it to be excellent for light to medium chopping and cutting tasks. Would make a good pack axe. A bargain for the money and I would buy again. Recommend a leather or kydex sheath to protect your edge as the factory supplied rubber edge protector is lacking.
