Works best with 20 - 18 gauge wire. My experience has been that it does not "cut" thinner wire well (24 - 22). I wish it could accommodate 16 - 14 gauge wire.

I've tried a number of loop makers over the years and these are so far the best I've found. Still a little tricky to get them to loop tightly against a bead on the wire, but there are ways to fiddle with it.
