I have my aunt's old one and used it a couple of times. Since it is ancient I don't use it anymore but wanted one that I could use. This pecan cracker is perfect for shelling hard shell and soft shell pecans. One good "whack" and soft shells are cracked so that you can get perfect halves. One good whack and a half whack and hard shells are perfectly cracked so that you can get your halves out perfectly. While I did have a couple, maybe 1 out of 10 that the tip broke off of the top of the pecan, I cannot blame the cracker. Shelling is fast and if you set up a "production line" and crack a bunch of pecans then pick off the shells, I found it was faster and gave my hands a bit of a rest from pulling back on the hammer. I searched everywhere around town and even some places out of town and couldn't find this cracker. I wouldn't buy anything else for pecans. It will crack walnuts and other nuts, but the walnuts will NOT fit under the guard and I couldn't get perfect halves out of them because the shells were too brittle.Read full review

The upright oak pedestal where the plunger contacts the nut on one side and the striker contacts it on the opposite side broke (split vertically) after about 30 nuts. I used Gorilla Glue to put it back together, let it set up 24 hours and put two small (#10) bolts through, 1 above and 1 below, and cracked fewer than 30 more nuts and the upright pedestal broke off at the base. The pedestal is too small, not wide enough side to side and of inferior quality.

I would have given 5 star but the rubber bands fell apart. Otherwise it's made with good quality parts. Cracks the nut shells just enough to keep the pecan kernel whole in most cases.

I kept hearing my wife tell friends she wished she could find a nut cracker like her grandmother had, where you pulled a handle back, released and wack the nut was cracked. I decided to search and sure enough, found and purchased. She loves it!

Works fantastic! Couple of whacks and your nuts are shelled. I will be using this one a lot as I have about 15 gallons of pecans to shell! Yeeeee doggies.
