I've owned my LGA1150 motherboard (Z97-A chipset) for about five years now. At the time of purchase, I was not willing to stretch the budget beyond the cost of Core i5. Over the years, I've slowly made upgrades to the system with NVMe storage, additional USB 3.0 ports via PCIe, and a fairly recent mid/upper tier graphics card. The system has always performed admirably, both for workstation & gaming tasks. However, recent trends are driving manufacturers (Intel & AMD) towards higher core count processors. Today's software is beginning to reflect this trend, taking advantage of additional threads and offering faster performance. While Intel's hyperthreading is not the same as a true increase in core count, it does offer 10% to 40% more performance in situations that can utilize it. Modern AAA game titles especially are beginning to show this need. Intel's Xeon E3-1271 v3 runs at the same clock speed as the Core i7-4790. It is faster than any stock clocked i5 on the platform. It is much less expensive than comparable i7 processors. Only the Xeon E3-128x v3 processors clock higher, and of course the Core i7-4790k. But, that 4790k will cost you double what you pay for the E3-1271 v3. Is that worth the price? Not in my opinion. This CPU represents a very good value for anyone still running an LGA1150 motherboard with a compatible chipset. It is within the top three fastest processors I can put into this board. I fully expect my upgrade will continue to keep my PC running for the near future, and avoid the expense of a whole system replacement (CPU, motherboard, DDR4 memory). I'm very pleased with the results, and highly recommend the Xeon E3-1271 v3.Read full review

I bought this as a drop in replacement for an i5-4670k. Not that it is that much faster in most things, but for the price, it will make the computer more useable overall for the next couple of years. I would love to have something newer, but I can't justify purchasing an all new system yet as I don't play any games that this thing can't handle just fine for my tastes. Functionally, this is the same as the non-K 4790 minus integrated graphics. 3.6 GHz (4 GHz turbo) Quad Core with hyperthreading vs my old 3.4 GHz Quad Core without hyperthreading for the price I paid is amazing. As I said, this isn't THAT much better for most things I do, but the cost made it worth changing. Together with 16 GB RAM and a fast SSD, this computer is super fast for every day tasks. Love it.

Great upgrade for those 4th gen i5 machines, performance on-par with 8th gen i5's! Only downfall is that it isn't W11 compatible at this point, and it is DDR3 only. But, it still does well with gaming when paired with a good video card. I installed this in my "toy" OptiPlex 7020 and it does not disappoint. Currently just has an RX550 with 4GB of GDDR5, but it does well. This pairing out performed the same machine with the GT 1030 OC noticeably. Which was surprising to me. If I could snag another VT RX 560 4GB model to put in this (best card that fits with the stock power supply), which would be a great super-budget rig. Not all boards will support the Xeon, so do your homework. The OptiPlex does, and it's great.

This is a fantastic cpu. Especially if you can find a used one. It is essentially the same as a Intel i7-4790 without the on-board graphics. It has 4 cores and 8 threads. Great for gaming, or anything else you can throw at it.

can't beat it for a budget price/performance upgrade for an aging Haswell system. 4C/8T boost to 4.0ghz should be good enough for 1080p gaming until this supply chain mess is sorted out and I can build something new.

Very good version of these Haswell refresh processors

This CPU is a comparable alternative to an i7 upgrade for a fraction of the price. As an added bonus, it's more energy efficient too.
