All Music Guides are great sources of information. The artists are arranged alphabetically with
a capsule history with important recording information and sideman they have been associated
with. There most important recordings are given short reviews, however many important ones are
not(ex.Carla Bley's Escalator over the Hill)The emphasis of the book is mainstream jazz and there
fore the coverage of Jazz Rock and Jazz Fusion are marginalized.
Another major thing for me personally is that the emphasis is on American Musicians and may
fine European's are not included.
So if you are interested in American musicians mainly this is a good selection.
