This is an excellent lens! I will note that I calibrated the lens to my Nikon D750 camera using a paper calibration tool with a ruler (tick marks) to ensure it wasn't focusing in front of the center or behind it. In my case, it focused behind the center (i.e. the number -2 was sharper than 0). I modified the camera settings to correct that, saved the settings for this lens, and it's spot-on. Everyone should learn how to do that (youtube to start) because there are many lenses and many camera bodies. Think about trying on a suit. Are the sleeves perfect, or does the coat need alterations? That's my point. The suit was made for a manikin, not you. Each lens most likely needs calibrating (i.e. alterations).

Let me touch on two points. In photo/video there is the old conversation of zooms v primes. I don't care what tests and studies show. I get sharper images easier with primes. Capturing photos or video of people I strongly recommend a quality set of 35mm, 50mm, and 85mm (or 105) fixed focal length lenses. Commercial photo video is my job and I am a Nikon shop. So I do have a 14-24, 24-70, and 70-200. Those are all excellent. But if I am setting up for professional portraits or interview video, I use the prime lens that fits the location. The 85mm gives me tight crops, sharp eyes, and soft backgrounds. And the second part. I don't know about Canon, Olympus, Lumix, Fuji, Sony or others. But Nikon will design and produce their fastest focal lengths, like 1:4 or 2:8. These are their premium professional products. Then they will release a 1:8 or maybe f4 version. Generally half the expense or less. Sometimes the slower models test a little better (I think DXOMark scores the 50mm 1.8 higher than the 1.4) The more expensive lenses are more durable and better weather sealed. So consider your application. For me this 85mm is going to be a portrait session lens with controlled lighting. The 1.8 is fantastic for this. Once you setup your shoot and use one of these single focal length lenses you will see what I mean. Primes deliver awesome images.Read full review

This is a light lens with incredible optics on DX cameras. I assume the optics would be better on full frame due to less cropping of the image, but on crop sensors, this lens is tack sharp all throughout the image, with no vignetting or distortion. The autofocus is fast, but nothing to write home about. Coming from a 35mm 1.8G, the mechanics on this lens feel incredible. The focusing ring is smooth, unlike the plastic gear-grind feel I get from my 35mm 1.8G. If you're looking for a good first portrait lens for both FX and DX cameras, I would highly reccomend this.

I've been a photojournalist since the mid 1970's and I still prefer my Nikon F 35mm over any DSLR. However, film and processing is expensive so I'm stuck. This f1.8 lens is nice but remember it is a single focal length, which I prefer to a zoom. I like the A/M focus feature and the wide aperture. As a Nikon purist I'm used to my Nikon products being made in Japan. This lens comes from China. "Not that there's anything wrong with that."

Upon receiving this badboy, I immediately mounted this on my D750. Im amazed by the images this thing can produce. Your subject in focus will everything looks creamy. My only gripe is that the body feels flimsy as its made of plastic unlike other lenses of the past. My guess is to cut down on weight. But overall image quality, i love this lens.

Overall i really satisfied it. Not so expensive. One of the most good thing is weight. Only the one thing that inconvenient is aperture. It is not circular aperture, so the picture's light expression is not so fantastic. But Overall that is really great lens. Price - 5 stars Weight - 5 stars Function - 5 stars F/stop - 4.5 stars Aperture - 4 stars

This lens is fantastic for portraits as well as general photography in low light. As a full frame lens, it is 85mm on a full frame body, but it is 127mm F2.7 on a crop sensor body like the D5500 for example. I use it on the FF D800 and the APS-C D7000 and the results are absolutely stunning. Highly recommended. PS - The D5500 doesn't have an internal motor for the Auto Focus, so on the D5xxx cameras you'll need to use this lens manually.

First of all... I'm not a professional photographer. I'm a newbie to all of this dslr stuff, so my knowledge of what is and isn't quality gear isn't that vast in comparison to the more advanced photographer. HOWEVER, I know enough to appreciate the clarity and sharpness this lens has added to my photos -VS- the kit lens I'd been using since purchasing my Nikon D3300 (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6). Even though I'm still a big fan of my kit lens, adding the 85mm f/1.8g to my bag has not been a disappointing move for me at all. It's lighter that I thought it would (because I read that it was heavy in other reviews), but even when attached to my camera body it still doesn't feel like it's weighing me down after hours of walking around - which is great for me. Oh... and did I mention that the photo quality this baby produce is INSANELY GOOD?!... well... IT IS! I bought mine on ebay at a great price (open box) and I am beyond pleased with my purchase, so if you don't have this lens in your bag you should really do yourself a favor and GET IT TODAY!Read full review

I purchased this lens to be used with my Nikon J1. I obviously needed the ft1 adapter. So it’s actually a 229mm prime lens when mounted to the ft1. When used with my Nikon DSLR’s it’s an excellent prime lens.

This is one of Nikon’s better lenses, without having to purchase their more premium (read:expensive) lenses. Good value here. This lens is better in performance than their 50mm. I use this in combination with my 35mm Sigma Art.
