Studio/Live Monitoring Headphones, DJ Monitoring Headphones
I've purchased more than a few of these headphones over the years...these and other Sony versions. They've all had very nice response, if a little heavy on the bass. Some consider this accurate response, and I don't say it isn't. I've come to consider these as good studio headphones, and I think you will, too. They are comfortable, light weight, and are very good quality. What I don't like about these is the small wires going to each phone. They are made that way to facilitate the folding of the headphones, to carry them in the included soft pack. These wires also slide through the headband, so you can make them fit your head.
All of this is good, but what I don't like about it is these wires are small and become fragile, over time. The insulation cracks and the wire inside can short or break. They don't remain flexible and that makes the headphones susceptible to breakage. If one of those wires breaks, one side of the headphones stops working.
Also, the pads are very flexible and quite comfortable, but the "plastic?" coating wears off too fast. Sure, you can get replacement pads, but I've got other brand headphones that have longer lasting pads. The problem is, those headphones don't have the same frequency response as the MDR-V6. These issues do lessen the quality of the headphones. Those wires getting brittle and breaking are the only reason I've had to replace them.
But, even with these issues, I still keep purchasing these headphones. I like them enough to keep spending money on them. I do wish that Sony would do something to make those wires not become so brittle over time, and maybe make the coating on the pads thicker or longer lasting in some way.Read full review
Sony MDR-V6 Headphones - very natural-sounding especially given their hundred Dollar price-point
The Sony MDR-V6 Headphones came out back in the 1980s and I don't understand why Sony chose to discontinue them as they have a slightly 'flatter' frequency response than the MDR-7506 Headphones which are still in-production. Physically the MDR-V6 Headphones appear identical to the MDR-7506 Headphones so whatever the differences are must be minor internal 'tweaks'. I find the MDR-V6 Headphones to be slightly more pleasant to use than the MDR-7506 Headphones as I believe the music has a more natural sound.
Not quite the top anymore, but an unbeatable value
I now prefer my Audio-Technica AT-7 set: better finish, slightly better comfort, slightly smoother sound, especially bass. Which is all there in both cases, just alittle cleaner in the A-Ts. Comfort is subjective, but both pass my test: can I sleep on my side wearing either pair. Both are very comfy in that situation. Since a lot of this comes down to taste, think of the Sony as a great value that is the industry standard; the 7s just a more contemporary presentation, especially for looks and quality of materials. But double the price. If open air headphones would work for you, consider Grado, Phillips, or Beyerdynamics.
Sony MDR-V6 Dynamic Stereo Headphone Monitors - What are they for?
You find these cans in many recording studios. Reason being they are quite brutal at revealing what is actually happening in your audio.
So are they good for listening to music?
IF you have very good quality, well mixed and mastered music...in other words, no CD's from the '80's :)
then the huge frequency response from these headphones will give you a revealing and very accurate representation of your music.
Sometimes this is a good thing, sometimes not so much
I use them for editing audio for which they are perfect.
They are a legend amongst headphones and for the price and comfort they are perfect for work. If your music sounds good on these then your music will sound good anywhere!
There is not much point in giving a long and detailed review as there are already many out there, plus these are in essence designed for Audio Engineers as a work horseRead full review
Studio Grade, Over-The Ears, Cable w/Gold Plug Headset
This Sony brand, MDR-V6 headset model has been time tested by professionals for a score of years. Even with all of the post-modern digital upgrades to various media playing sources, this headset is professional grade, it's so versatile.
One of the great benefits of buying the new but older model is that the cost is much lower than newer models; however, the quality of sound is exquisite. I use mine for both academic digital video sound monitoring while I am filming since the jack is standard size and fits right into my JVC digital camcorders.
But, inside my home, I can also plug this headset right into the jack of my television and have the equivalent of surround sound without anyone but me hearing it since the ear covers cover my entire ear and are very well cushioned for both comfort and blocking in the sound I want and blocking out the sound I don't want to hear.
By the way, even eBayers sell inexpensive extensions to fit universal size headset plugs so that an individual can walk a whole house while listening. You can't do that with cordless headsets that go out of range~Read full review
