I use these incandescent light bulbs to keep baby chicks warm. They are a much smaller wattage and are less dangerous than the heat lamps. I have always used these type of light bulbs for baby chicks. I keep my baby chicks in the house in a carboard box or a plastic tote and hang a utility light from the lids that I make from hardware cloth. If you don't have cats or dogs that might hurt the babies and don't need the lid, you can just put a small table lamp in with them. Depending on how many chicks I have and how cold it is, I usually transfer the chicks to an outside brooder/coop when they are around 3 weeks. I put one of these incandescent light bulbs in the outside one too. I do recommend getting more than one type of wattage because sometimes you don't need a lot of heat.
