Full disclosure, my camera body doesn't support the auto focus in this lens, so I've only used it as a manual. That being said, I do a lot of portrait shots, so this lens is perfect for that and I would need the manual focus anyway. Super high aperture. I've used this in a dimly lit nightclub and taken pictures with the flash off and gotten clear pictures. (Used max ISO so there was a lot of noise in the pictures, but fixed that in photoshop). I love how crisp the pictures come out, and the bokeh is mind-blowing. Unedited portraits come out looking like something that took hours to blur the background on in an editing program. 10/10 would recommend. Both images are ones I took with the lens. Check out the bokeh.

Cheap, nifty fifty. It’s a good bargain so I would recommend picking one up. The aperture ring is not smooth which bugs me but it gets the job done.

I've been shooting Nikon for 35 years, and have owned about 20 Nikkor lenses. The 50mm f/1.8 Ai has the best IQ of all the NIKKORS I have (along with the 28mm f/2.8 Ai-S). It is probably the sharpest lens I've ever owned, and the contrast and color are at least as good as any Ai or Ai-s lens. The images it can produce with a tripod are nothing short of stunning. It is also an amazing value, and the 50mm angle of view, whether full frame or crop sensor, is essential for those who like primes, as I do. Over the past few months I've sold most of my modern plastic NIKKORS and am buying Ai and Ai-S lenses to replace them. They are better for video, and for landscape photography for many reasons: smaller, lighter, better made, and easier to focus in the field and offer much more precise depth of field focus (zone focusing is superb, unlike modern AF lenses). That last fact allows me to get everything in focus while using the widest aperture I can, every time, and quickly (before my hands freeze). Oh, and they are cheap.Read full review

I really like this lens, and have been recommending it to any friends I know who own a Nikon. For less than $200, this is a quality lens that takes pro-level photos - even in minimal light. Do yourself a favor and purchase one of these beauty's today and take your photography to the next level. Things I enjoy about the lens: - I get fantastic quality in every photo - It's lightweight and hardly takes any room in my camera case - Can drop it down to f/1.8, which is fantastic for low-light and helps get that nice blurred background you've been wanting - Made by Nikon - It works on both FX and DX camera bodies - It's less than $200 - Versatile/staple lens for many situations Things that could be seen as cons: - It's a "prime" lens, so 50mm is what you get (but, makes it simple) - The Autofocus does not work on DX camera bodies below the 7000 series (though the manual focus is easy to use) Overall: - Buy this lens - you won't regret your decision at all.Read full review

I ran across this Nikkor lens while shopping for the 1.4 to use for my daughter's video project with my Canon 5DMII. It was such a bargain and the reviews so positive that I purchased the lens and love it. Mounted on the Canon 5DMII, the camera becomes unobtrusive and better than the huge 24-70 mm zoom when out and about for street photos. The 1.8 is plenty fast compared to the f 2.8 on the 24-70 mm zoom with the Canon 5DMII. I later acquired the 1.4 and I find the images taken with the 1.8 Series E to be almost indistinguishable. Of course, the same advantages and limitations reported in my review of the 1.4 lens apply - shallow depth of field when shooting wide open, probably not as sharp as the Canon version of this lens, manual focus can slow you down but manually adjustable aperture, much faster and nonetheless beautiful images for the price of a Canon lens.Read full review
The product I received was in excellent condition. the aperture ring was snappy and focusing was precise and easy. There only a tiny scratch on the front element but did not affect image quality. this lens was not only compatible with my Nikon f3, but also my other digital apsc and full frame Nikon bodies.

This is a good lens for someone wanting to explore low light photography with fast apertures like 1.8. The background blurs nicely and the sharpness at 1.8 is good. The sharpness at f 8 seems to be better. The lens is well constructed and feels good in the hand. With proper care it should last for many years. The pricing was more then fair for this lens. The Nikon AF 5mm f/1.4 is several times the price. If you can afford the 1.4 then go for it. The 1.8 is a great introduction in to faster prime lens.

Great lens, at first it took some time to get used to the manual focus as I have a nikon D3400 so no autofocus, because this lens is not supported on this model. Now that I got a hang of it I actually really love it as I can fully control the focus and create images that I want. The images are sharp and amazing, now I can't stop taking photos as this lens is incredibly fun to use on just about anything, it's also really good in low light. I highly recommend this to anyone especially for the price and the additional things that came with this lens.

In purchasing this lens, my goal was to be able to shoot in lower light without the blast of flash photography. Wow, what beautiful pictures, rich colors, and amazing "depth of field". Unfortunately today, we are not offered this kind of lens quality unless forking over large amounts of cash. Instead we get a kit zoom lens with vibration reduction which really is just compensating for lesser quality. Technology vs. Craftsmanship is another way to put it and it has changed the way we take pictures. This 1.8 aperture allows a tremendous amount of light on to the sensor compared to a 3.5 aperture kit lens of today's dslrs. With that, my shutter speed can be quick enough to capture my image without blur and without "VR". The downside? Focus. There is nothing auto on this lens. But... It makes me a think about my shot, the result is I'm taking less pictures and each picture is worth keeping. How many of us have over a gig of shots we are too lazy to delete hoarding up the hardrive. For us that remember, a 36 roll of 100 iso would not be wasted. I love this lens and have purchased more of these prime lenses. There is this tangible sense of quality you have when holding one these. It makes you want to shoot better. Eventually I will be looking at a very wide angle lens to compensate for the crop factor of my camera. It is worth noting that, if you're not familiar with the transition to dslr, cameras have different size sensors which turn your 50mm lens into varying but mostly a higher mm. For me, shooting a Nikon D80 and Lumix GH1 (for video) the crop factor is up to 2. Meaning on the GH1, the 50mm is actually 100mm. To wrap up, I'm grateful these lenses have been cared for by the previous generation of photographers who knew the art form and function better than most of us. They are now available for us to practice the craft, achieve fantastic results, and appreciate our shots even more.Read full review
This used lens came in excellent condition. It is lightweight, has top quality optics, and meter indexing for Nikon DLSR cameras with a meter indexing tap on the lens mount. Requires manual focus and aperture setting, but these are the secrets to taking good photographs.
