First of all, the lens I have is for an AI mount, not an AF mount and it is an f2.8. It is very well built and despite being a varifocal lens, not that hard to use. I was able to use it shooting a local basketball game and it worked well. It is pretty soft wide open at f2.8 but pretty good at f4. I think using a circular polarizer would help this. It does flare somewhat easily but I also bought a hood for it which does help. It also worked well for some astrophotography images at f4. It is big and some would consider it heavy but it has an incredible cool factor if nothing else.
