Rented a flute for a couple months to ensure the initial interest wouldn't wane. It didn't so I purchased this Yamaha new. It is as good as the higher-end rental my student was using. He is male if that matters. Case is fine and sturdy enough. The carrying case is a big, big help and is also robust. Don't know much about flutes, but the sound is every bit as good as the high end piece. The teacher gave it a thumbs up as well. Can't think of any reason not to buy this for a beginning student.

After lots of research and reviews I elected to purchase the Yamaha YFL 221 flute for our daughter who has been playing for almost 4 years (started in 6th grade). I wanted a good flute that wasn't too expensive. Immediately I could hear the difference in sound. This was a huge upgrade from the Bundy flute she has been using. She is delighted with the way it plays and sounds. She said learning how to tune it has been the only thing she has had to get used to.

I purchased the flute for my granddaughter - a 3rd year middle-school flute player. I took it to our local technician for any adjustment it might need. He declared it to be perfect from the factory and said he wasn't surprised because Yamaha is one of the best in the business. It's a huge step up from the loaner from the school, has much better sound, and holds concert pitch way better. Our young musician says it's also much more pleasant to play. Her teacher (who recommended this model in the first place) says it's the right instrument at least through high school.
Sounds so so much better than the cheap flutes she was playing before! So glad we chose this brand and model! What a difference!
