Viewtiful Joe is designed to offer classic platform action with state-of-the-art graphics and visual effects. Players take control of regular "Joe," a cel-shaded hero whose side-scrolling adventures are presented in the style of a movie. Joe soon gains the ability to transform in to Viewtiful Joe, a superhero with the power to befuddle his enemies with cinematic special effects. As he makes his way through the adventure, he earns new and more powerful abilities.
These powers allow Viewtiful Joe to execute special combos, or even control the flow of time. He can speed things up for a flurry of fisticuffs, or borrow a trick from Max Payne to slow the action for some cinema-style battle. Conceived and designed under the guidance of Capcom's Atsushi Inaba (producer of Steel Battalion) and Hideki Kamiya (director of Devil May Cry), Viewtiful Joe offers GameCubers a fresh look at classic side-scrolling combat.

Viewtiful Joe received positive reviews upon its release. The GameCube version of the game currently holds a GameRankings aggregate score of 92%, while its PlayStation 2 port holds a score of 88%.[37][38] Metacritic lists the GameCube and PlayStation 2 versions of the game at 93 out of 100 and 90 out of 100, respectively.[39][40] The game's graphics, gameplay, and challenge have all been common areas of praise among many reviewers. IGN gave Viewtiful Joe an "Outstanding" rating, noting that the beautiful cel-shaded graphics and high-intensity action make it one of the best action games on the GameCube and PlayStation 2.[11] Likewise, Eurogamer called it "imaginative, beautiful, engaging and above all else entertaining".[7] Game Informer praised it as "a completely original and highly entertaining work of art".[49] Criticisms about Viewtiful Joe have been few but consistent among reviews. IGN complained of the game's lack of boss variety.[46] GameSpy has concurred, noting that the bosses were too easy due to a powerful attack that the player can perform.[10] Reviewers have also criticized the lack of progressive scan in the game's PlayStation 2 port.[11][13] IGN and Eurogamer have additionally pointed out that the PlayStation 2 port suffers slowdown in later stages of the game.[6][11]
In Japan, the GameCube version of Viewtiful Joe sold through its initial shipment of less than 100,000 copies during the week of its release.[50] Preorders of the GameCube version sold out on Capcom's North American website prior to its ship date, and Viewtiful Joe debuted as the tenth best-selling game in the region.[51][52] The PlayStation 2 version sold a poor 9,912 units in its first week of release in Japan.[53] Worldwide, sales of the game reached 275,000 copies on the GameCube and 46,000 on the PlayStation 2.[54] Sales of the game in both North America and Europe were lower than what Capcom had predicted, but due to its small budget, the game was considered by Inaba to be relatively successful commercially.[26][55]Read full review
Viewtiful Joe was one of the highest rated games of the console generation. IGN gave Viewtful Joe a 9.5, or "Outstanding" rating, citing the beautiful cell-shaded graphics and high intensity action made it one of the best action games on the Gamecube. Viewtiful Joe won the player's choice awards in Nintendo Power. The G4 television program X-Play named Viewtiful Joe the 9th best game of all time for the GameCube.
Viewtiful Joe's gameplay is very unusual and draws inspiration from classic side-scrolling brawlers such as River City Ransom and Double Dragon. Joe has three 'VFX' {Viewtiful Effects} powers, which are designed to emulate camera tricks seen in movies such as The Matrix: Slow, Mach Speed, and Zoom In. All of these are used in combat and to solve the game's puzzles.

Viewtiful Joe for Nintendo Gamecube was a complete surprise to me. First off, I've been a gamer since my family first got the NES for Christmas when I was six. The NES, SNES, and Genesis were all about the side scrolling beat em' up style fighter. Since then, we haven't seen too many quality games of this genre. Viewtiful Joe however brought all that back to me on this title, and its great to be back. Viewtiful Joe is cell shaded and heavy on style, which works great. It has a simple story that's just enough to keep you into the game, but realizes that you are just here to beat people up. Speaking of putting on the beat down, I gotta say its fun. You will find yourself doing all of Joe's cool moves just because they look cool.
With that said, the game is rather challenging for the casual gamer, especially in the later levels, and even more so in Adult Mode. The good news is that the hardcore gamer will be challenged, but the bad news is that the challenge will only last 6-8 hours for the experienced. There are some unlockables that might bring you back for more however.
Overall the game is fun, looks great, is more of a challenge than most games on the market. Viewtiful Joe brings back a nostalgic feeling for retro gamers, even though its something new, or was, at the time of release.Read full review
I bought vietiful joe but when i opened the envelope i saw a vietiful joe 2 game case which threw me off for a moment cause i thought i must have bought the wrong game but it turns out the first vietiful joe game is in the sequels game case which is no big deal i just found it funny all in all the game disc is in pretty good condition barely any scratches and at least when i buy vietiful joe 2 i dont need a case for it!
This game is excellent for somebody who wants a challenging game. I crave for RPG games but since Gamecube is limited and I've alomost bought all they have to offer for RPG or challenging games. To me this game has humor, plays very well with the controller setup, its challenging, and overall it's excellent. I base my decisions on buying games first through research and reviews like in IGN.com. IGN has video feed back on most games I buy and this game happen to be one of them and I don't regret buying it because its great. I have't seen the cartoon version of this game but I would sure like to see it now that I have played this game. For those who are hardcore RPG gamers this game is mission based and you can complete each Epsiode based on the number of missions it take to complet the Episode. Thats as close as it comes for RPG to me but anyway give it try you won't regret it.Read full review
