decent factory flash for the sony nex 3/5/7. biggest advantage of this flash is the conservative battery consumption and the compact size. camera will fit in most standard cases with flash attached, altho the screw has a tendency to back out, so we do have a couple of these (can find them for a decent price used) We also have a f20 flash, and a larger hotshoe flash which do a much better job lighting large scale shots, but they dont fit in the standard case. So we use this flash normally and leave it attached, keeping the larger flashes in the camera bag. this flash has a tendency to give poorly distributed light, so i also recommend getting a diffuser (bounce style is what we use)
This flash is small and easy to misplace. That's what happened to mine. Due to Sony proprietary connections for the flash shoe, I had 2 options. get a generic adaptor to use any universal flash or see if Ebay comes to the rescue. Ebay to the Rescue! On Ebay the flash was found and at a very affordable choice (far cheaper than trying to order direct from the manufacturer or authorized resellers). I'm even able to use several flash adaptors (for bouncing the light) with this flash. I am a very very happy customer, photographer, human.
Was looking for one for a used camera I purchased when I looked on Amazon they were like over $100 new so I found a new in box one on eBay for a good price and I got it and it works perfectly for the NEX –5N. This is the smaller flash there is a larger one if you need it for more panoramic views is my understanding.

It's a very basic flash, but it does the job. It works with the camera very well, because it was designed by Sony. It's not very powerful, not much better than the pop up flash on most of its rivals cameras. But it works, and the case attaches to your camera strap. And it's very inexpensive, unlike the more powerful NEX flashes.

The flash compensation feature on my SONY NEX-3 makes this a very versatile TTL flash... For like twenty bucks!!! In a Chinese underwater housing, even. Of course, you need to shoot CLOSE underwater.
