To start with, this "flash" is nowhere near bright enough to be useful as the main light source at stopped down macro apertures, even when less than an inch away. I still use a powerful off-camera flash (or flashes) to light the subject during the exposure. I just use this ring light as a continuous focus assist light source. In that mode, you don't need the control module in the hot shoe, freeing it up to hold either a flash or remote trigger. Just tape the control box somewhere on your macro rig, set it on continuous light mode, and leave it be. If you have a spare cold shoe somewhere on your rig, put it there instead. The "flash" mode is no brighter than the continuous light mode, so I don't really see the point to it. The adapter rings work great. I haven't had any sticking issues with them. You will want to put a rubber band in the channel to keep the ring light from spinning freely. When turning it on, remember to hold the power button down for about 3 seconds until the power light comes on. For about 20 bucks, it's a great deal as a macro focus assist light.Read full review

I could never have it working, either using NiCd batteries or plain Alkaline. Probably a bad contact somewhere. Anyway the quality is what to expect with such a low price : not usable. Back to real brands like Pentax and Nikon... GH

Cons: Construction is all plastic so care must be taken to avoid damage. Allow some crop space in your image because of the circular shadow on the perimeter. Not well suited for distances beyond 3 meters. Pros: Does not add much weight to the end of your lens. Light and 3 flash modes makes getting the image right easy. A good array of adapter rings for most lenses. Clean white LED lighting for good white balance. Well worth the money.

Be aware that this is not a TTL controlled light. Don't expect to define a wide range of settings. This device will augment your triggered flash option. That being said, the constant light feature is useful to me. I can use if hand held or around the lens and choose my own settings; speed, aperture, ISO etc. the results are very good.

I needed a simple circular light macro photography or video recording in the dark. This type of added rings perfectly fit any Canon machine, also functions as a flash, but it can also be used as a flat light. The quality is very good, not cheap plastic, very well put together. Overall, I am satisfied with it ...
It's working well, i just saw two little perfectible points : - for video, the PWM isn't filtered. it's making some "lines" on the picture - it drawns 17mA on the batteries when it's off. so you always needs to remove them... I think i'll redo the electronics. But the mechanical mounting and the LEDs are really nice!

Someone reviewed that this unit isn't good for macro, "not even from an inch away". They must have been shooting molecules or something because this thing is bright and works great for macro. Is it a video light?....NO and based on the ad there's not a reason on Earth to think that it would be, so if you buy one hoping to shoot video with it don't blame the product. My experience is that it's an effective ring flash to about 3 feet, so, not what I consider an equal to a zenon tube ring flash, but for DSLR macro work and close up shots it's a great little item at a great little price. Color temp seems accurate enough and white bals out to about 5400. I like it and I'm happy with my purchase.

It's bright, it defenetly lights up what ever object you put infront of it. It would be even better with a manual dial to change the brightness. At this pricepoint, you can't have too many complaints.

This device produces a powerful light for close-up (macro) shootings. The way the device is designed, on a reflective material, the individuals LEDs can be seen on the picture. Used as a flash, I don't get good results with automatic settings, so I either use manual settings or the continuous lighting mode.
used for video on macro subjects, good amount of light, worth the money! Also I tested this with my canon 1ds to shoot still photos of various things and it worked great as a ring flash, If you want a pretty good, low cost ringlight this one is great! for the money I GIVE IT 5 STARS! but using it for video I had some flickering, not bad but noticable with a professional video camera in low light I noticed it from time to time.
