This is one of MANY Wheat Belly books I’ve bought to give away after I first bought one for myself. It’s So Much More than the title tells. This is NOT a diet book, although you can lose a great amount of weight if you follow the advice to take all wheat products out of your life and not make meals on sugar and potatoes. When I first read this book, I was astonished at what this current hybrid form of wheat is doing to the human body. The research is extensive and made me wonder how this hybrid wheat can be sold for human consumption. The wheat doesn’t only cause weight gain but many other aches and ailments throughout the body. Aside from losing over 50 pounds, I noticed that the rough skin on my elbows disappeared and it became smooth again. I noticed the same thing with the heels of my feet. There’s no telling what internal benefits I received by removing wheat products from my regular diet. Do you have, or know someone that has intestinal problems? Do your older parents or your grandparents have arthritis? I strongly suggest you get this book. There are many other issues caused by ingesting this hybrid wheat on a regular basis. Even if you don’t have any complaints yourself, chances are you know someone who would greatly benefit from the findings given in this book. It’s an easy read, although it sometimes gets very technical and detailed. The author does have a good sense of humor and I actually laughed a few times, which is rare for me, but it was good because it broke the seriousness of what the book deals with. The main reason for reading this book is to know WHY you should give up eating wheat. Someone can tell you to give it up but without knowing why, chances are you won’t give up the biscuits, rye bread, whole wheat bread, pancakes, cookies, bagels, dumplings, crackers, melba toast, croutons, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, hamburger buns, ciabatta bread, ramen, and so on, and so on, and SO ON. That’s the thing- people don’t really think about how much wheat they eat because it’s the main ingredient in so many of their favorite foods. It might be a little tough to eliminate it from your regular rotation of meals but you CAN get used to it. Believe me, it’s well worth getting this book and well worth getting rid of the wheat products in your life.Read full review

I first found out about this book while searching blogs on weight loss - and I'm so glad someone mentioned it. In two weeks I've lost about 5 pounds, but what is really amazing is this - For two years I've had pain and swelling in my knees (at times extreme shooting pain), and haven't been able to walk more a few minutes most days, nor swim or ride a bike. Along with this have been sleepless nights due to pain, and low energy and depression from not being able to exercise. I eliminated wheat from my diet and within 2 or 3 days I was walking just fine - with no pain - and even danced for hours one night! I will understand if you find this hard to believe - because I find it hard to believe myself - but it's true! In the last 2 years I've had 3 cortisone shots in one knee, and 2 in the other knee. An MRI showed torn meniscus in two areas of one knee (our HMO would only MRI one knee). I don't remember ever damaging the knee or doing anything out of the ordinary - it just started swelling and hurting. So IMO, I think this book is worth it's weight in gold. I bought a second book and sent it to my brother who has had problems with excema. He hasn't started the wheat-free diet yet, but I'm hopeful. Also, the book is so well-written and documented, and is very interesting reading - hard for me to put down at night. So yes - I highly recommend this book.Read full review

Started reading the book, then began implementing the diet. Eventually read an online review that pointed out some weak analysis in the book. However, I was already losing weight so I kept reading. But the big plus for me was the lack of rheumatoid arthritis in my fingers. I just woke up one morning and realized I no longer had pain in my hands. A definite side benefit to going wheat free. I have to assume that was the cause as I had made no other changes to my diet or lifestyle. And I continue to lose weight at a measured rate.
I've never had an hour glass figure, even when I was thin. But as I've gotten older, the girth around my mid-section has continued to expand, despite exercise, exercise, exercise. Earlier this year, I joined a Biggest Loser-type competition for an added incentive. I began working out and cut my calorie intake drastically. Despite the changes, the scale did not reflect my effort.. Discouraged after nearly 7 weeks of sacrifices without results, I turned to the computer. I Googled 'how to get rid of a fat belly' and 'fat belly diets' and other similar phrases. Tons of crazy potions and silly gadgets resulted. Among all those results, a few seemed valid, so I began investigating reader reviews on various sites. The Wheat Belly book had mainly positive reviews, whereas other plans were either too restrictive or too difficult to follow because of weird ingredients. I purchased the book used so that I wouldn't feel cheated too much should it, too, be a gimmick. From the reviews I read prior to purchase, I got a good idea of what the diet curtailed and began eliminating wheat products from my diet even before the book arrived. I began to see near instant results! So when the book did arrive, I was anxious to dive in and take control, finally, of my expanding equater. The author lays a good foundation as to why our society has ballooned seemingly overnight - genetically altered wheat whose effects on human health were never tested before unleashing it on us. And that wheat is in everything, from pasta to bread to cereals. It seems like we Americans have been duped again by large multinational companies that care more about the dollar than young children who have been diagnosed with diabetes, pre-diabetes, and heart disease. Or your mother, father, sister, brother or husband who are dying at alarming rates because the altered wheat is not compatible with proper human function. In the book, as I said earlier, the author lays out the history, and then he discusses the medical issues resulting from wheat. All interesting, but I jumped to the section referring what foods I should eat, the menus, and recipes. Good stuff, people! Worth every cent I paid and every cent I save from avoiding all the health problems associated with altered wheat. Bottom line: it took me awhile to get here, and it will take time to get rid of my spare tire. This is the best results I've EVER had in a diet plan. Sure, I crave cake and cookies, but not any where close to how much I hate being fat and unhealthy. And the craving are subsiding quickly. In a short time, I have lost six lbs., I think its been one week. To satisfy my bread craving and to add variety to my lunches and dinners, I have made bread with almond flour and brown rice flour. I cook them in my Express Grill gadget. I have also made pancakes with those flours - they taste rather like corn meal Johnnie cakes, but they taste like heaven with a couple of eggs (I'm not into syrup). If the typical diet has not worked for you, you are probably altered-wheat sensitive. I think taking wheat from your diet alone, without exercise, will result in weight loss. But since I am competing in a BL contest, exercise helps. I hope this review helps someone. It saddens me to think about the kids and young adults who have known no other lifestyle than fast food and genetically altered food products. How about we start a revolution and take back our health!!Read full review
We liked the information included in this book. The author tells the 'why' of how wheat lends itself to extra weight gain at the middle portion of your body. It's important to understand that wheat produced today is different than in days past. We have to be diligent to understand also that our ancestors had more physical labor involved in day to day life... all of them, men, women, grandparents, even children, had more physically challenging life. This, coupled with more available food, keeps us prone to be FAT. Think of it, at any time of day or night, you can get into your car and go buy a full meal, fast food of course, but it's available.
Great read. When I started having to go to the doctor for all kinds of ailments starting at age 46 (ailments described in this book to a T), I heard about this book from a nurse at the hospital and decided to read it. Now my doctor has me scheduled for a brain MRI for the vertical eye spasms and inability to maintain my balance. I had just started to read this book and by page 50 decided to give up all bread products (thanks to 90% of all wheat in the world is no longer natural wheat---now it is genetically altered at the seed level). By page 50 I'd learned that cells in the grey matter in my brain, unlike the cells in the rest of my body, no longer regenerate, so whatever brain damage is done will stay with me for the rest of my life. Since I already have a hard time finding words to be able to finish my sentences both at work and in my social & family life, I'd like nothing more than to not lose any more of my intelligence thank you very much! The cumulative effects generally hit around age 48-53 so don't wait to read this book (if you are much younger than 48) so you can curb the effects in your future by giving up bread now. Also, there is a cookbook you can order by the same author with the same title included ("Wheat Belly Cookbook") and one with recipes to make in 30 minutes. Basically by giving up wheat, you would shop free range meat (best, but expensive), all the produce you want, (with a healthy mix of fruits and vegetables- preferably the ones that are organic (best, but more expensive than the ones treated with fertilizers). Always be sure to wash your fruits and vegetables thoroughly with dish soap and water then rise off all soap. I hope this review is helpful!Read full review
This is a definite "MUST READ" for all of us especially us seniors that were born before the 50's when wheat was healthy and not genetically altered to produce more of it. In this day and age wheat is a addition to any meal and although we have partaken of our daily bread for many years it is now time to say goodbye to a bad food. Please read this book!! It will change your life!!!
