Blockade Billy. Stephen King. Catalog Number: 1315472.
From New York Times bestselling author Stephen King comes the haunting story of Blockade Billy , the greatest Major League baseball player to be erased from the game. Even the most die-hard baseball fans don't know the true story of William "Blockade Billy" Blakely. He may have been the greatest player the game has ever seen, but today no one remembers his name. He was the first--and only--player to have his existence completely removed from the record books. Even his team is long forgotten, barely a footnote in the game's history. Every effort was made to erase any evidence that William Blakely played professional baseball, and with good reason. Blockade Billy had a secret darker than any pill or injection that might cause a scandal in sports today. His secret was much, much worse... and only Stephen King, the most gifted storyteller of our age, can reveal the truth to the world, once and for all. Originally published through Cemetery Dance Publications on April 20, 2010 as a $25.00 limited-edition hardcover, Stephen King and Cemetery Dance have made an arrangement with Scribner to make available a less expensive hardcover edition of Blockade Billy , with an on-sale date of May 25th, the same date the audiobook goes on sale. The Scribner edition will be available in all U.S. and Canadian retail outlets. Both the Scribner book and the Simon & Schuster audiobook will feature a bonus short story ("Morality").
Two short stories best read by fans of the Master and not the casual reader
Blockade Billy and Morality were released in 2010 as sort of a Novella / Short Story hardback book set. Both stories are classic Stephen King and tell two different tales. Blockade Billy tells the story of a rookie baseball catcher for the New Jersey Titans in the heyday of baseball. He comes out of nowhere and is virtually unstoppable but his team soon discovers he brought with him a dark past and terrible secret. Morality tells the story of an aging minister who makes a proposition to his caretaker to solve her money problems, if she will perform a dark errand for him.
These stories are classic King because like most of his short stories, these lack the character and story development we've come to expect from his full length novels. Blockade Billy isn't a bad story even though it was reportedly written in fifteen minutes. The setup is pretty good but the ending is abrubt. Like most of the Master's short stories, I wanted to read more. Morality, on the other hand, I did not care for. It's hard to like a story when you can't identify with the characters and in this case are actually annoyed by them.
The Blockade Billy set is best suited for hardcore fans of Stephen King, like myself, who have read everything he has written and basically collect the books. This set only numbers a little over one hundred pages and really isn't meant for the casual King reader. However, for three to four dollars for the basic book it's a decent deal. This certainly isn't King's best work but it's a quick read and worth the money.Read full review
I was really excited when I saw a baseball book by Stephen King. I was really let down when I realized how much foul language was in this short book. The story was good, but the cursing was just too much of a distraction for me.
