I bought this lens because I wanted a system that was small and light, didn't make me stand out in a crowd looking like a wanna be pro photog, was quiet, required some vision to actually use, and moved away from the automation that is all the rage. The M6 and 50 mm Summicron hit the mark. I must have gotten lucky. The lens seems to like my camera and the images are tack sharp... as expected. Aperture and focus controls, once I got used to putting my hand out there again, are extremely easy to use and soon I expect I'll be able to set aperture without even looking at the scale, the stops are so positive. In pursuit of an agile system I thought the integrated lens hood would compliment the goal but therein lies the only gripe, and a small one it is, I have. The integrated hood feels somewhat cheap to me. It might be because I also shoot an older 35mm with a solid hood that needs to be attached and I have gotten used to that. The hood isn't exactly smooth to operate either. Sometimes it will stick but that might go away with more use. Overall, I think it detracts from the Leica mystique a bit. On the whole, however, I absolutely love this lens. No more auto focus which I think is great, and as for zooming, the size 10 zoom controls on the ends of my legs seem to still be working which, on occasion, actually lets me to talk to people again vice zooming in on them. I bought this particular lens because it was difficult to find a mature sample that I thought was actually worth the asking price. Under the same conditions I'd definitely make this purchase again. All-in-all I have no regrets.Read full review
There are 3 or 4 different lenses with the same name and black finish like this Summicron-M50. Some are better for black and white on film, the last Serie is perfect for Color and even digital photos with the Leica M 8 or 9. Get the Serial Nr. and know the jear of the Summicron produktion. Look for this List in the wep. All them are very good but different. I use this lens proffesionel , I just can say it is very sharp and one of the best 50mm lenses ever made. Like all Leica M Produkts, it is different.
Its a very sharp lens. Its also very compact and the dials turn as expected smoothly but not too loose.
