This is the album that (regretfully) turned out to be Bowie's last. It also, in many ways is his best. Exploring a jazz infused style that so fits his ethos one would have thought he'd have done it years ago, his songwriting is as nimble and mysterious as ever. On this album Bowie sings in a voice that is mature and clear. True to form, the songs are diverse. "'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore" and "Sue" are funky and free form and seem to pair thematically. "Blackstar" is almost two songs fused together. "Dollar Days" is a beautiful ballad made all the more poignant with the thought of Bowie singing the line ". . I'm dying to. . . " knowing that he is indeed dying. With the exception of "Tis a Pity She Was a Whore," "Sue," and possibly "Girl Loves Me," his impending death is hinted at throughout the songs. Stylistically, "Girl Loves Me" is a great beat driven ditty. It is written in a combination of standard English, Nadsat (the slang language from 'A Clockwork Orange'), and Polari (British gay slang from the '70's). It's a real treat to tease out the meaning. Admittedly, I am a raving Bowie fan, but I fear the true magnitude of this album will be discounted as hyperbole over his death. It is far too good to be considered merely "death as a career move." If Bowie had lived, his work may only have borne out the fruit from this new seed. Read full review

the quality and packaging are fine- it's the content that sucks. at 1st listen i thought maybe it was me, but when i played it again for 2 others, we couldn't listen longer than 15 minutes. the 1st song sounds like a dirge and the album doesn't get much better. as a huge bowie fan, i find this cd very disappointing. better off listening to changesbowie. this cd doesn't even deserve a rating.

Bowie speaks to us yet again through his own style of codes. I kinda thought he might have written some lyrics into this album for those tuned in to hear them. After just one play of this CD, I am convinced he was spelling out his fatal illness and yes there are so many other hints like;to what type of cancer and how he lived and spent his time up until this final release. This man lived such an amazing time here on planet Earth. I wish only more of our population followed his spirituality. David will always be a hero in my heart and mind through his unique way of getting our attention. This lineup of songs have to heard round and round again to know their true meanings. A+ teaching album. This cardboard triplet fold out has a star system photo and black on black fonts with one small distant picture of Bowie and a seal of authenticity surrounded by a starscape of deeper meanings.Read full review

This album made it to number 1 on the Billboard charts in almost no time at all and is undoubtedly David Bowie's best work. It deserves to be album of year. You don't have to be a Bowie fan to fully enjoy it. I find that it has a jazz/rock flair. All of the tunes seem to intertwine in their own way yet each has it's own unique sound. Even though there are only seven cuts on this album, they are all good. You don't feel the urge to skip over any tune. The more I listen to it, the more I get out of it. Simply a must have to a music lover's collection.

He was creative right up to the end. I love his early stuff, but this has a lot of credibility too!

This is an artsy album project with a strong and affected display of his great talent that continued the genre-bending, experimental path Bowie has led us successfully over the decades. A fabulous departure album for the genius that is David Bowie.

Bowies death record is 1 of his best records albeit dark & ominous... Darkstar sounds like nothing else in David's musical cannon, a haunting & fitting farewell from The Thin White Duke
