The Toyota Land Cruiser, a full-size SUV built for off-road driving, has been in production since 1951. For 60 years, the Land Cruiser has been one of Toyota's best-selling vehicles and part of its ever-growing lineup of reliable and dependable automobiles. Each generation since the first has a different series designation, such as the 40 Series, the 50 Series, and so on. Every generation improved upon the last as Toyota continues to provide a reliable vehicle that can withstand harsh conditions and treatment.
The Toyota Land Cruiser has evolved greatly since the early 1950s when the BJ and FJ models were being produced during and after the Korean War. Afterward, the 20 Series was produced, which helped pave the way for future models in the lineup. The 20 Series, produced from 1955 to 1960, was a box-shaped vehicle that was available in two-door soft-top, hardtop and pickup truck, as well as a four-door station wagon. Today, the Land Cruiser is officially a full-size SUV meant for both on- and off-road travel.
The most significant change to the Land Cruiser came in 1980 with the introduction of the 60 Series. It was produced only as a four-door station wagon but had six available engines, complete with petrol and diesel turbo options. Production of the 60 Series lasted until 1990. The 70 Series was introduced in 1984, however, to make up for the lack of body styles available in the 60 Series. With the 80 Series in 1989 came a larger body and more powerful 4.5-liter petrol engine.
In 2008, the Land Cruiser was built on the same platform and design as the Lexus LX 570, which gave it a much more elegant look with smooth, rounded corners. However, it only offered a 5.7-liter V8 engine and 18-inch alloy wheels, which provided more sidewall for off-road driving. Some of the interior features include smart entry, push button start and stop ignition, 10 airbags, and four-zone climate control.
The newest model also comes equipped with driver-assisted technology called CRAWL, which is a four-wheel drive control system that maintains uniform speed while traveling off-road. Included in the package is a multi-terrain anti-lock braking system and kinetic dynamic suspension system. The 2010 - 2011 Toyota Land Cruiser captured the award for Vincentric's Best Value in America and the Best SUV, Mid-Size Premium award for the fourth year in a row.
