The Mini Cooper, which first gained notoriety as a British car in the 1950s, is now produced by BMW. Available only as a hatchback, the Mini Cooper is a stylish and functional update with a central audio system pod, tilt wheel, seating that has been modified to provide the ultimate in comfort and the new Mini is longer than its predecessor.
With a new four-cylinder 1.6 liter engine, the Mini Cooper has added enough power that the base version achieves 118 horsepower and 114 pound-feet of torque. With six forward gears, the control directs power through a choice of manual or automatic.
The Mini Cooper hit the scene with a splash in 1959. It became a respected icon, beginning as a clean, agile, well-designed car with an 850CC 34bhp engine. Throughout the 1960s, its engine capacity rose with the 76bhp 1275cc S series car. The Mini continued its reign as the car of the rich and famous from The Beatles to Enzo Ferrari. During the 70s and 80s, the Mini lost some of its iconic status, but was re-launched in the 90s. The brand was transformed with a new 115bhp version of a 1.6 liter engine.
The Mini Cooper features three trim levels. Available options include air conditioning, leatherette premium vinyl upholstery, sophisticated stereo-audio system, with wheels that range from 15-17 inch alloy and high-end brakes. The Mini Cooper has a reputation for being a fun" car to drive. Owners comment on the car's handling, and stylish appearance not to mention that the Mini fits into smaller parking spaces! The Mini Cooper has had a decent safety record, although with several faults and minor issues. The most serious of these is a failure of the 5-speed manual transmission, in the 2003 model.
The Mini Cooper has won numerous awards, including "Car of the Century", "Number One Classic Car of All Time", "European Car of the Century" and "Global Car of the Century". Industry awards include recognition for Strategic Vision, and industry awards include 2001 Car of the Year (Auto Express Magazine), 2002-2006 Most Appealing Compact Car (J.D. Power & Associates), 2003 North American Car of the Year, 2006 Best Brand (Kelley Bluebook) among other awards.
