The Land Rover Discovery 4, also known a LR4 in North America, is a mid-sized SUV that has been in production since 1989. Land Rovers are known in Britain as the car the Royals use when they want to go off-road. The Discovery is a bridge between the Defender, which is all off-road; and the Range Rover, which is all luxury. The Discovery does both, though is better with the off-road than with city driving. Later models tried to make its performance on both ends more equal. Models include the S, SE, HSE, and Limited Edition.
The Discovery 4 S has a 2.7 liter V6 Turbocharged and Intercooled Diesel engine with a six-speed manual gearbox. The engine produces 208 hp and 384 lb. ft. of torque. Its maximum speed is 180 mph. It can go from 0 to 60 mph in 11.7 seconds. Its fuel economy is 25.4 mpg city and 34.9 mpg highway, which is a nine percent improvement. It was designed by Gerry McGovern with seating for five.
There have been four generations of Discovery. The first was called the Discovery Series I and was available from 1989 to 2000. It was not a very reliable car and on-road ride quality was less than stellar. The versions from 19976 and 1997 were probably the best of the Series. The Discovery Series II was produced from 2000 to 2004 and saw lots of trim changes. Four-wheel drive became standard, as did many other luxury features. The Discovery 3 or LR3 was available from 2004 to 2011. The name was changed in North America because the Discovery and Land Rover name had become known as unreliable. Multiple electronic traction control systems became part of the SUV as did Terrain Response. The LR4 or Discovery 4 was produced from 2009 to the present. The exterior was changed to look more like the Ranger Rover Sport. Most other changes to the LR4 were mechanical.
Standard interior features on the base model include electronic windows, cup holders in all rows, leather steering wheel, automatic climate control, and a parcel shelf in the cargo area. Options include sun roof and cruise control. Exterior features include rear windshield wiper, halogen front lighting, and heated rear windshield.
Since its launch in 2004, the Discovery 3 has won a total of 97 international awards, which is a world record. It won Best Compact 4X4 at WHATCAR? awards. In 2005, it won North American Truck of the Year award and Motor Trend magazine's Sport/Utility of the Year.
