The Audi R8 is a two door, two seat exotic sports car. Featuring Audi's quattro all wheel drive technology and a design which shares many parts and elements with the Lamborghini Gallardo, the R8 offers world leading speed and handling. Possibly best known as Iron Man's car, due to its appearance in the recent film starring Robert Downey, Jr., the R8 has a sleek and modern appearance.
Both of the engines available for the German-built R8 are extremely powerful. The smaller option is a 4.2 liter direct injected eight cylinder engine which generates 420 horsepower, 317 pound-feet of torque, and the ability to accelerate to 60 miles per hour from a dead stop in just 4.4 seconds. The 5.2 liter V10 offers 525 horsepower, 391 foot-pounds of torque and a 0-60 acceleration time of just 3.7 seconds. All of this power is designed to propel the car's two occupants and not much else, due to its 3.5 cubic foot trunk.
The R8 was first released in 2006 as a concept car. When it debuted on the world market, it was a coupe with a 4.2 liter V8 engine and a choice of a manual or automatic transmission. Audi has expanded the line to include both a coupe and a convertible Spyder edition, and to offer both a V8 and V10 engine configuration. In keeping with automotive trends, Audi now offers the option of a sequential manual gearbox in lieu of the automatic transmission.
Although a legitimate supercar, the R8 also offers many of the same creature comforts of any German luxury car. It offers a full range of both passive and active safety systems ranging from a rigid frame to multiple airbags. Audi builds it with a comfort-oriented cabin featuring heated power leather seats and automatic climate control. Entertainment options abound with a 465-watt Bang and Olufsen stereo available, as well as support for satellite radio.
Not surprisingly, the automotive community has embraced the R8. In 2007, it was British television show Top Gear" Car of the Year. In 2008, it earned the same honors from Playboy, MSN and Automobile Magazine. Articles in Evo Magazine and other comparison tests have compared it favorably to cars like the Porsche 997 and Aston Martin V8 Vantage, and it has even beaten the similar, but more expensive, Lamborghini Gallardo around Top Gear's test track. It also received honors in its home country with both Motor Klassik and Autobild magazine also voting it best car in its category.
