Experienced car collectors often go by the mantra, “They’re only original once.” For them, a car retaining its original powertrain and paint can be more desirable than a completely restored example. The 1966 Pontiac Ventura currently for sale on eBay is one such car, reflecting decades of care by one family since new.

From its stacked quad headlights to its swooping roofline and bulging rear fenders, this full-size Pontiac exudes confidence and commands attention. At just under 18 feet from nose to tail, the Pontiac Ventura is one big muscle car. Its exterior is free of any stripes, scoops, or other hints to the performance that lies within.
This Pontiac is the rolling definition of a sleeper. When ordering the Ventura, the family checked the box for the biggest engine available at the time, the legendary 421-cubic-inch V-8. The YH-code engine was good for 338 horsepower and 459 pound-feet of torque.
Matched with a three-speed automatic transmission, the 421 has more than enough grunt to bring this beast up to speed quickly and in style. It was identified only by subtle “421” badges on each front fender. One can only guess how many aspiring street racers were left in the dust at stoplights.
Rare Ventura
The Ventura was actually a rarely seen option package for the Catalina, even though exterior badging identified it only as a Ventura. Said to cost $128, Pontiac Ventura extras included an upgraded interior with vinyl upholstery, additional trim, and fender skirts that are not present on this example.
This Pontiac Ventura spent decades with the same owners who bought it new. Clearly a special-order car optioned for performance, it remains much like it was when it left the factory. One important change: The original bias-ply tires were upgraded to BFGoodrich Radial T/As mounted on period-correct Cragar mag wheels. A set of super rare Pontiac eight-lug wheels is included with the car.
The Ventura presents well and appears to be finished in its original burgundy paint with a contrasting black interior. Photos show no evidence of rust, and the body is free of dents or other damage. All the factory trim and hard-to-find badging are in place. The odometer indicates 105,000 miles.

The interior is just as nice, with no rips or tears in the seats, headliner, carpets, or dash. A large, sweeping speedometer dominates the instrument panel. Ancillary gauges to the right are angled toward the driver. A Sun oil pressure gauge was added to the dash.
It’s rare to find a collectible car that remains so clean and original after almost six decades on the road. It’s particularly hard to find one this nice that was built for performance. That’s what makes this Pontiac Ventura so special and why seasoned collectors prize examples like this.
An all-original car has nothing to hide. It eliminates the all-too-common possibility of having to redo work that may not have been quite up to snuff.
