Relive the ’80s in This Rare 1986 Chevrolet Cavalier Z24

American  /   /  By Jim Travers

Conceived as a world car, the Chevrolet Cavalier was launched for the 1982 model year. A performance-focused Z24 trim arrived in 1986 with added features and performance. Very few of these remain, making the well-preserved Cavalier Z24 hatchback currently for sale on eBay a very rare find.

Forward Thinking

The Cavalier was a forward-thinking design, sharing a platform and components with similar models produced by General Motors’ subsidiaries around the world. It was also only the second vehicle from Chevrolet with front-wheel drive.

With just over 71,000 miles on the odometer, this Cavalier Z24 is a trip back to the era of big hair, MTV, and the Rubik’s Cube. It’s completely original inside and out, right down to the factory stereo with tape deck and freshly rebuilt graphic equalizer. If that doesn’t do it for you, check out that multicolored digital instrument display.

Outside, the Cavalier Z24’s bright red paint gleams like new. It really pops in contrast to the matte black and gray trim. Nearly new raised-white-letter Michelin tires complement the ‘80s vibe. They mount on the original five-spoke, Z24-exclusive alloy wheels. Subtle mud flaps were added to protect the paint from errant stones.

More Powerful

Z24 models got the more powerful of two engines offered with the 1986 Cavalier—the port-injected, 120-horsepower 2.8-liter V-6. The original owner of this car opted for the four-speed manual transmission for a more involved driving experience than the more common three-speed automatic. The powertrain is said to start right up and run well with no issues. It has just received a fresh synthetic oil change and filter.

The interior is just as clean and original as the outside, and just as much a product of its era. A storage bin with slots for cassette tapes sits under the dash. Fuzzy, velour-like material covers the doors and headliner. A glass moonroof and large glass expanse make for an airy feel and good visibility.

The original retracting cargo cover is still with the car, as is the spotless gray carpet covering the spacious trunk area. Additional factory equipment includes cruise control, power locks, a thick sport steering wheel, tinted glass, and an air conditioner that is not currently functional.

Performance Upgrades

Other Z24 upgrades include a sport suspension, ground effects bodywork, blacked-out trim, and the previously mentioned cool OEM alloy wheels and Back To the Future-style digital dash.

An interesting tidbit: While the Cavalier Z24 package was offered in both coupe and hatchback body styles, six coupes were sold for every hatchback to roll off a dealer’s lot in 1986.

Slow sales led Chevrolet to drop the hatchback. The Cavalier was redesigned for 1987, making this car a one-year-only offering. It is one of the rarest Cavalier incarnations, in addition to being the most enjoyable. An affordable price only serves to sweeten the deal.
