1955 Lincoln Capri: Luxury, Performance, and ’50s Style

American  /   /  By Jim Travers

Lincoln is a luxury brand these days. But it was once known for performance that matched its posh features, making it a favorite of hot rodders and racers in the 1940s and ‘50s. This outstanding 1955 Capri two-door hardtop currently for sale on eBay combines the power of Lincoln’s first modern, overhead-valve V-8 with tidier dimensions and improved handling.

Sporty Lincoln

Launched in 1952, the stylish Capri was the first sporty Lincoln. It was positioned as the brand’s flagship and was offered in three body styles: pillarless, two-door hardtop (like this car), convertible, and four-door sedan. Of the three, the two-door hardtop best embodied the designer’s vision, from its commanding front grille to its sleek profile and swept-back tail lights.

The two-door gained favor with performance-minded drivers back in the day and became a dominant force in Mexico’s grueling Carrera Panamericana race. In 1952, it swept the first four positions in the touring car class, repeated the feat in 1953, and posted a 1-2 finish in 1954.

This Capri is not one of those Panamericana race cars, but it is in excellent condition inside and out. An older restoration finished the car in a very 1950s two-tone mint green with a dark green roof. It shows only minor blemishes here and there from being driven and enjoyed. The paint has a beautiful shine, and all the chrome and stainless trim are in excellent shape. Overall, this is a fine example that’s ready to show or drive as is.

Two-Tone Cabin

The two-tone theme extends to the cabin. The sofa-like overstuffed front bench seat and matching rear seat (with fold-down center armrest) provide plenty of room for six. The headliner, seats, and carpets are all free of damage. Creature comforts include power steering and brakes, a pushbutton AM radio, heater, and defroster.

341 cubic-inch V-8 engine

The 1955 Capri was the last before a complete redesign for 1956, so this car benefits from all the improvements made since its 1952 launch. Most significant of these was a big increase in power from the Capri’s new, 341-cubic-inch V-8. With a Holley four-barrel carburetor and increased compression, the 1955 Capri cranked out 225 horsepower compared to the 1952 model’s 160. This car retains its original engine and three-speed automatic transmission, both of which are said to run well.

Clearly a car that was well cared for over the course of several decades, this Capri comes with its original owner’s manual and paperwork. It even has what is said to be the original spare tire in the trunk. All you need to do is bid, get in, and go.
