FOR THOSE OF US WHO NEED ANCIENT WORDS CONTEXTUALIZED
Here's a dictionary for the NIV bible that will actually fit in a fanny pack. I wouldn't have called it a 'dictionary'. Instead, I view it more like a mini condensed encyclopedia. I write that because the text doesn't simply 'define' words. It provides ample references like a concordance does to places in the NIV bible where the word, concept, place, person, or event can be located. The print is awfully small point & I need a magnifying glass combined with trifocals to see the words. There are also an abundance of modern pix of places mentioned in the NIV bible. The text is detailed enough to contextualize the meanings of actions, rituals, concepts, foods, animals, statuses, etc. in their ancient relevance. So many other bible study books fail to detail the difference between what something meant 2000 or more years ago, compared to what it means at the time of publication in 1993--the 20th century. Books that don't take into account what a ritual meant, for example, in 600 BCE when writing to a 20th century reader are books that attempt to take that ritual out of its historical relevance, as if it means anything similar to the same ritual in the 20th century! It does do dictionary typical acts like phonetics, rooting the words and such things a 21st century reader has come to expect of any good enough dictionary. It's a fun history book to have by the night stand to spot read. It's also handy when the NIV study bible doesn't go into enough specific detail about ancient history. Even though it's got around 650 pages & the NIV study bible has around 3,000, both can be easily carried in a nap sak by a person with disabilities who is not supposed to lift more than 10 pounds. But don't forget to bring a magnifying glass.
