Easy to use
Good image quality
excellent player for those who want ALMOST maximum output.
This player (& its big brother the HD-A35) are the top of the line HD-DVD players. The format (HD-DVD) is now defunct, as of 2008, & this player is for those who want maximum visual & auditory bliss with their HD-DVD's. I happen to own the HD-A35, so i'll speak on that one. The player can upscale its resolution to 1080p/24. (This means that you're watching the quality of an actual camera capturing the actors in the movie). No compressing or quality lost at all. With the new firmware update (v4.0). The HD-A35 will allow you to use TRUE 7.1 audio without compressing anything..THIS IS THE ONLY THING THAT SEPARATES THE HD-A35 FROM THE HD-A30. Everything else is identical. The A30 only goes up to 5.1 audio. So if you're going to buy an A35 & don't don't have a 7.1 setup,(or a 6.1 setup), then you're better off with the A30. Ok. i'll now talk about the features. As mentioned previously, the A30 has an upscale resolution of 1080p/24 (24 frames a second. MOVIE-INDUSTRY STANDARD FILMING). It has an optical audio out (5.1), & a coaxial audio out (5.1). a Component (1080i) out, a composite (480i) out, & of course an HDMI (1080p/24) out. The picture is stunning. When i played the Transformers HD-DVD from the Samsung Smart TV (2010), it looked as if i was there in the movie itself..(that 1080p/24 is crazy). & then i did a regular DVD of it (Transformers), and though you can't do the 1080p/24 with it (it gives the "strobe light" hazy effect to it), the regular 1080p is damned good..(laughing)..& make sure you have GOOD HDMI cables. Remember when you buy this player, you HAVE to look online for the version 4.0 firmware update. The player has an ethernet connection & you may be able to do it from the player itself with an internet connection & a CAT5 cable. if you look online for it..make sure you have the correct player with the correct version of the firmware update. So in all, a great player for a time that's gone but not forgotten (by some)..LOL..I thank you all for your time. Peace..& God bless you & yours.. A-Weapons..South Bronx, NYC..
Review of Toshiba HD-A30 DVD Player
The player produces a good quality HD picture, sound quality, and seems to have a good transport system. The player is also a very good upconverter player for regular definition DVD's. I purchased this player new and fully warranted. When the player functions properly, it's a good player for my 46 inch 1080p TV. One problem, though, is that the player started to not perform its functions. It would welcome me, but when I loaded a DVD, it would say goodbye and simply turn off. I had other playing problems, too. Eventually, I would get it to work. So, I unplugged the player for awhile, plugged it in again, and then it worked properly, and has for the last two times I used it. I also went on-line and downloaded the most current firmware I could find. I haven't made a CD of this firmware yet to upload to the player. Hopefully, I won't have to. So, we'll see if I have a problem again. If I do, and keep having problems, I will use either the manufacturer's warranty or the extra warranty I purchased thru eBay to have the player repaired.
great 1080p movies, great DVD upconversion, affordable!
I bought this player because I wanted 1080P capability with the cheaper HD DVD format until the Sony Blu Ray S550 player comes out. My main reason however was to have good upcoversion of my standard definition DVD players. I have an older Oppo upconverting DVD player and the Toshiba A30 beats it hands down. My Standard DVD's look better than they ever have previously. I own a Mitsubishi WD73833 and 1080p content looks amazing on this player. To get true 1080p output you need the Toshiba A30 or the A35. The cheaper A1's, A2's and A3's only output 1080i. I upgraded the firmware to the latest version of 3.0 and I have had no issues playing movies in the "Up to 1080p/24 fps" setting. I did have to have this setting set to auto because otherwise if I set it to force 1080p/24 fps my TV wouldnt display a signal. My TV supports 1080/24fps but for some reason it wouldnt display and to be honest since this player will be my secondary player along with a Blu Ray player I am not going to spend a lot of time trying to figure out why. If you dont have a budget for an HDDVD player I would get the A35 as it is improved over the A30 especially with the audio capabilities. I think with the latest firmware the A30's shortcomings when it was first released have been resolved. Currently as of this date the A35's are going for too much money given the format doesnt have a future and that is why I went with the A30. I am currently building my home theater area so I didnt have my entertainment completely setup so I cant tell you how the audio sound coming from this player. If you have a desire to watch 1080p content, have great upconversion of your standard DVD's and dont want to buy a Blu Ray player just yet. You cant go wrong with this player at the price is currently listing for here on Ebay.
Great intro HD DVD plyr!!!
If you were on the fence about getting a toshiba product fear not, this is the perfect intro to HD/upconverting player. With the format dead now you can get these for cheap if you want to. I am a dedicated HD DVD owner and proud of it, ok so it does take a while to load so what. Updating trouble I never needed to for any HD DVD's I own so... If you also own a receiver that can handle the HD audio formats using HDMI, try to get your hands on an A35 model. This A30 unit will NOT carry those signals to the receiver, I tried. This is why this is going on my cheaper model Toshiba LCD in the bedroom. I mangaged to program my remote to control everything and it's awesome. Get them while they last!!!
