How To Build A Misfits Collection
The way I see it if you wanna build a Misfits collection either as a newbie to the band or as someone (like me) looking to replace the old cassettes, The best thing you can do is buy Walk Among Us and The Box Set and then if you want the "In the Doorway" single that was sneakily put onto the Static Age cd (sold AFTER the box set) just pay .99 cents to download it off the internet. This will get you most of the essential Misfits material, and then, if you want, you can start trying to track down all the rare vinyl etc. Yes, The Box Set is pricy but even if you pay $60 for it, it is still much cheaper than buying all the individual cd's PLUS if you want the rare outtakes etc. you will only find them here. Anyway here is what you get: Collection 1 Collection 2 Legacy of Brutality Evillive Earth A.D. The Sessions Disc Static Age Now even you payed $10 a disc (and you won't find them that cheap new)your still getting The Sessions Disc for free. Trust me, before I bought the boxset I did the math several times! Anyway, I'm not gonna argue about which discs are better but I will say that almost every Misfits release has something unique on it. A Message to the Newbie: Make sure you buy Walk Among Us too...It's one of the best Misfits albums!!! Another message to the Newbie: Don't waste your money on any of the post Danzig Mifits...it's really not the Misfits
Great collection for a fan of the early Misfits.
This is a really great collection for anyone that's a fan of the Danzig era Misfits. It covers most all their studio releases and even songs that were not released until after the band split up. There are multiple versions of many of their most popular songs including Hybrid Moments, Skulls, Astro Zombies, Halloween, Cough/Cool, She, etc. There are also live versions of several songs but I was disappointed that there is not a live version of Hybrid Moments or Last Caress(only one version of Last Caress). The box set includes a fiend club pin and a book with lyrics, pictures, and an extremely brief "history" of the Misfits. The lyrics are nice to have but so much more could have been written about the band and most of the pictures are overlaid with the lyrics which severely detracts from the pictures themselves. If you aren't a hardcore collector that has to have every individual CD or Vinyl release, this collection is what you want. It will save you alot of time spent searching for and buying albums to cover all their releases. That being said I still think the retail price on this box set is too high. In my opinion at that price the set should have included an actual book or more of the bootleg recordings, of which there are many. I suggest watching Ebay or checking Amazon to find this collection at a dicounted price. I was able to purchase my new, still sealed box set for $20 less than retail price.
The Misfits Coffin Box Set (4CDs Caroline Records 1996)
This box set is a must for any Misfits fan! Even if you own all the CDs from the Glenn Danzig era, this compilation includes a lot of exclusive stuff you won't find anywhere else! And it all comes in a very stylish and appropriate Coffin-Shaped Box with faux-velour lining wherein sit the 2 Double-CD cases, the exclusive fired-enamel "Fiends Club" badge, and the 28-page booklet which includes extensive liner notes from Eerie Von, a track listing for each disc, complete lyrics for 50 of their best songs, a complete discography from 1977-1995, and tons of exclusive pictures and memorabilia. All-In-All, everything you could possibly ask for and more! As a collector, I chose to purchase the original and rare 1st printing release, which has been long out-of-print and therefore highly desirable. There have been follow-up releases of this boxed set, but with some changes; most notably in a slightly inferior quality to the product's contents, like a more cheaply made Coffin Box and "Fiend's Club" badge. So this review covers the original 1st printed edition only, as I feel the later editions should be reviewed separately due to the differences in quality. So if you are a serious Misfits fan and/or a music collector, my advice is to put your money on the original, out-of-print 1996 Caroline Records Coffin Box set.
Rosetta Stone of the Black Arts
Okay, I really didn't get anything NEW out of this. Over the years I've picked up the albums and the collections (really its hard to tell the difference between what was an album, released while the band was active and what was a collection put together after Glenn went to Samhain and the other two lived in their parents' basements for a decade or two). BUT here's the thing with Misfits fans. We'll pretty much give in to the marketing and anything with the logo or album images will find their way to our homes. So year, while there were only about 6 new things on the box set for me, the presentation was everything. The coffin design, Fiend Club button, red faux velvet interior, and booklet gives the fan and collector a sense of completion, and maybe even in a geeky way, a sense of accomplishment.
Box Set [Box] by Misfits (U.S.) (CD, Feb-1996, 4 Discs,
This is one of the best bands of all time. Danzig has a perfect voice for this style. The Misfits are an American rock band often recognized as the progenitors of the horror punk subgenre, blending punk rock and other musical influences with horror film themes and imagery. Founded in 1977 in Lodi, New Jersey by singer and songwriter Glenn Danzig, the group had a fluctuating lineup during its first six years with Danzig and bassist Jerry Only as the only consistent members. During this time they released several EPs and singles and, with Only's brother Doyle as guitarist, the albums Walk Among Us (1982) and Earth A.D./Wolfs Blood (1983), both considered touchstones of the early-1980s hardcore punk movement. The Misfits disbanded in 1983 and Danzig went on to form Samhain and then Danzig. Several albums of reissued and previously unreleased material were issued after the group's dissolution, and their music became influential to punk rock, heavy metal, and alternative rock music of the late 1990s and early 2000s.
