I loved all the things this book has to offer. She has captured the spirit of the time and place of Quakers in Indiana during the civil war. As a Quaker myself (few of us left in that part of indiana now) I get the sense of Meeting, I get the inner conflict that becomes a family conflict the desire to be true to one self and to how one is raised. I see how Jess loves creation, I see how his wife must adjust to things, how quakers had to adjust, and what a terrible thing war is, and how powerful love is. I see so much of the longing of the soul and the fullfilment and joy this quaker family has experienced. It is a good read.
