Timbuk2 has gone away from its roots as a bag for the true bike messenger. I have a Deedog from almost 20 years ago that still holds up, and Timbuk2 recently repaired it for free (I'd torn off the cross-body strap in an accident). Regardless, the size large now is smaller than my Deedog, but has nicer features for the commuter, like a built in key tether and more interior organizer pockets. It'll still fit at 17 inch laptop, FWIW, and considering the loads I carry in my bigger Deedog, this'll more than hold up for your commute stuff beyond the foreseeable future! Water resistance is very good- believe me as I've ridden in the rain many a time, more than an average fair weather commuter might.
