This has to be THE MASTERPIECE of all historical pieces done on India and the subcontinent. Michael has done a phenomenal amount of reserach before undertaking this venture and it shows. He comes across as a genuine journalist with asense of curiosity and awe in dealing with the local people - ranging from the ordinary citizens to local historians to heirs of age old ruling classes. Compared to my various readings, and I am no authority on the subject, this appears to be an accurate description and timeline of India's VERY LONG history, dating back to the first inhabitants hailing from Africa and settling in what is now Kerala through the ages of the Guptas and the Cholas and Akbar to the more recent (even that is 60 years ago but certainly recent in India's timeline) independence from the British. To boot, even the photography is absolutely fantastic, bringing to life the many colors of India, not just what nature has provided, but also the Indians' flair for bright colors. I watched the series over 3 days (2 hours each time) as it is 6 hours long on the 2 DVD set.... AND MUST BE SEEN ON BLU-RAY... EXOTIC & BRILLIANT!!Read full review

I saw this series on PBS about a year ago and loved it. Michael Wood, who is the narrator and guide through India has a very infectious, enthusastic manner and obviously loves India. His enthusiasm holds the viewer's attention. And...best of all, I learned things about India I had NEVER heard before, ie., more ancient civilizations than previously known, the interactions of the various groups who conquered and inhabited India for hundreds of years, and the part the country played globally. The photography/scenery is outstanding, the production is outstanding, and you'll want to see it again!
This is an excellent buy. Michael Wood is passionate about this subject. The visuals are stunning; the editing, the music, the story is mesmerizing. It's archeology; it's anthropology; it's history given to us in a very entertaining way. Michael Wood takes us to archeological sights, and provides us with really good interviews by authorities on the subject of: The Story of India.
