Time for this classic to be remade - but who could replace Heston?
This movie really does show its age, but its relevence and outright disturbing commentaries on society deserve to be revisited.
Charleton Heston plays yet another role which he, predictably, overplays, but that is what he does best and I, for one, can't get enough of it! Anyone cast into this character's role should do likewise and if he wasn't cast for this spot, it most certainly would not have had the impact on audiences that it did, and, in fact, would probably have never made it onto celluloid at all.
More of a horror movie than a Sci-fi thriller, you must excuse me for the overuse of the expression "disturbing", but there really is no better word to describe the plot, subplots, and commentaries contained within Soylent Green's storyline. If you have not seen it before, I will not be the spoiler, but, suffice it to say, it is truly a horrifying concept overall and, just in case it is never remade, I strongly suggest you view this version. It will undoubtedly start you thinking about what may be in store for us in the (perhaps not-so distant) future.
There may very well be people out there devising similar schemes right now.
