Easy to use
Good image quality
Great camera - served me well for years
I bought mine in December of 2010. Its a great camera - great ergonomics. Its not too heavy, and its quite easy to hold in various positions. The steady shot works very well. The controls are easy to access. Movie quality is good, but obviously 7 years after getting it, my iPhone takes clearer movies. Picture quality is great and the HDR is a feature I use quite a lot. The "kit" lens is fine, but I think I would have achieved better results with a more expensive lens. The autofocus does leave something to be desired, however. If motion is happening quickly, like an airshow, for instance, it has a very hard locking up. I started really using it on manual focus much more. Manual focus is good though - hit the "garbage can" for a closer look, then hit it again for an extreme look and you can focus very precisely. Of course this works best if you have it on a tripod. I would say its quite rugged as well - after several years, a little piece of rubber is peeling off, but this thing has been tossed around quite a bit and is in really good shape. Overall, I am really happy with my purchase, and I will very seriously look at another Sony Alpha in the future.

Great Value. Awesome for pictures and short HD videos.
Awesome camera. Great picture quality. A lot of good features but not a lot of information about how to use them is a negative. Good size and weight. Got the camera at a great deal. 2010 camera of the year. Only other negative about this camera is that I was trying to take video and after 10 min of video shooting the camera started to overheat and it turned itself off and would not let me use it for 15 min. So if you were wanting to use this for long videos then I would suggest getting a different camera. If you are just taking pictures this camera will not disappoint.
A great lens makes a camera great.
Great, but you can only film in manual mode otherwise it picks up the lens focusing noise. Pics are great with good lenses the 18-55mm is really poor lens. But eh is the basic lens thecamera comes with. I bough it mainly because its very easy for me to synch it with my iPad. And also because of the latest technology:) Overall I'm happy with it would not traded it for a canon.
Excellent image quality, quick capture, versatile.
I moved to this camera from a Sony Cybershot only because my old camera had gotten slow to focus and the megapixels (5) had become an issue. I found I was missing shots I normally would capture. I take a lot of photos that end up in year books, power point presentations, professional postings (medical), and on sports websites. One thing most of my shots have in common is action and difficult subjects to contain (animals, youth, sports). At the other extreme, I am taking pictures of small medical lesions or surgeries that have to be pinpoint accurate. This camera really jumped up my production. It has a very snappy focus and quick response. New features I especially like are the 10 shot rapid fire for sports and candid shots. The auto focus took some getting used to, I am still a manual person, but now I like it. I am accustomed to changing lenses according to the shooting circumstances and there are a wide variety of lenses available for this camera. I am a minolta person from way back (35mm days). I love the color minolta lenses produce; no other lenses quite capture it. The minolta lenses are fully compatible with the Sony, so I was able to find some old, inexpensive lenses that produce fantastic quality. One reason I stick with Sony, rather than Canon or Nikon, is that the integration with the computer is so seamless. I can use multiple programs, different operating systems, different online services and I never seem to have a problem. This is an excellent camera: very versatile, lots of excellent quality inexpensive lenses available as well as higher quality ones, tremendous range in functionality from supermacro to wide angle, very quick to capture images, good battery life, great view screen. I am definitely pleased with this camera.
Great Overall Camera, Good features, Great pictures, Fair Price.
Bought this camera new with the SAM lens and have been very empressed with the quality and ease of use of my Sony a55. I have been using it now for close to a month now and I am still discovering things about this camera that amaze. I also use a Nikon SLR camera which cost me more and has less features than this camera does. The video quality in the a55 is much better than most other due to the tranlucent mirrors, my Nikon always seems to need constant refocusing. I had some great vintage Minolta Maxxum lens for this camera which have made the experience all the better, I would also suggest looking into these for the price their great and some of these lens or legendary in quality, like the "Beer Can Lens". The features and quaility of the camera whould make this a good choice for most beginner and intermediate photograhers as well. Not hard to learn the basics and get great results, and with a little learning you can take control and get great custom results. Great Camera, an older model now but this camera can still keep up.
