So yeah, you have to solder the battery on for it to work, which it does say in the description. If you get the leads soldered in the right places, it works perfectly. It hasn't exploded and seems to have a protection circuit, so it's working so far. It actually powers the iPod and doesn't seem to have issues putting out the right voltages or anything.
