Developer PopTop delivers gamers to the age of steam, steel, commodities, and capitalism in this sequel to its 1999 hit Railroad Tycoon II. As did that game (and also the classic original, Sid Meier's Railroad Tycoon), Railroad Tycoon 3 casts players as the captains of an up-and-coming railroad system, in competition with other, like-minded entrepreneurs to claim as much of the lucrative 19th and 20th century rail trade as they can. Beginning with a modest amount of start-up capital, players found a company, purchase cars and locomotives, lay down track, and choose the kinds of cargo their fledgling rail systems will move and trade. Track-building tools include bridges, overpasses, and the return of tunnels from the original version of the game. Players can choose from over 35 different commodities, the value of each tied to a dynamic in-game economy. More than 40 locomotives, from the earliest steam-powered machines to the latest electricity-driven "bullet" trains, are available to haul these goods from town to town. This third edition of Railroad Tycoon challenges would-be captains of industry to prove their capitalist savvy in 25 scenarios set in locations around the world. A sandbox mode is also available, for those who would rather build their rail empires on their own terms. Online multiplayer support includes a matchmaking service. While Railroad Tycoon 3 is designed to retain and improve upon favorite gameplay features found in the earlier titles, it also makes some changes -- the biggest of which may be the switch to full 3D, thanks to a game engine PopTop developed itself for this project. Players can now view any part their developing empires from nearly any angle, with a camera angle that spins, pans, and zooms smoothly on most contemporary computers. To ease recognition and make management easier, the trains, stations, towns, and other landscape features are not completely accurate in scale to their surroundings, but they now appear much more realistically across the game world countryside. |

Glitchy Version but still fun
Hello. I love this game, I had it a long time ago in the original box and 2 disk version, however the play disk was destroyed. I ordered the single disk "PC Gamer presents" edition to replace my original. The game is still fun BUT it is very glitchy and I think and have been told my others that it has to do with the quality of the "PC Gamer presents" re-release of the game. The game is still fun but it does freeze up and crash a significantly greater amount than the original. So find it in the original if you can. Game play is excellent although I wish you could operate individual trains instead of just following them with the camera. The money system and load system is a little confusing because it does not follow logical for the freight loads. Once you figure out that you only need one station per city it gets easier. Some of the track laying can be annoying because the system tries to anticipate what you want to do with track and it can make for a rough and unwieldy design engine when you first start out. Practice is my best suggestion. I love the diversity of trains although a little too much steam and electric, more diesel please. Overall a relaxing way to spend a rainy afternoon.

Game is Addictive. Worth every penny!
This is an amazing game. It one of the best tycoon games ever made. There is an accurate and easy-to-read budget with all factors taken into consideration.<br> I like how you can put trains on auto-consist, so they pick up whatever will make money. However, if you have too many trains, it slows down your computer gameplay, like it does on my 128 Ram computer.<br> There are many fun maps and scenarios to play. Supply, demand, price, competition, and other things are fun to manage. There are informative maps that show the supply and demand of certain products and the prices, so you can decide where to run trains to make a lot of money. However, you don't have to only run trains, you can buy industries, farms, and ranches, making them even more profitable by running products to and from them with trains.<br> Stocks, bonds, profitability, controlling expenses versus income and other things make this game amazingly realistic and makes a unique challenge at any hardness level to be the ultimate tycoon. Also, there are no rules to regulate you from using underhanded maneuvers to stab your opponents and fellow tycoons in the back, or take over, or become chairman of their company. <br>The graphics aren't great, but this is an amazing game and I would strongly recommend it for anyone who likes tycoon games.

One of the Best Railroad Game for the PC on the Market
I rated this game as "Good", because I don't think any game is really "excellent"...for any of them can be improved upon. I bought this for our son, who really enjoys this game, and would recommend it to others! As far as dislikes, he probably would say is, that he would like for it to have had more functions in it, to be able to do more in the game, besides just the trains & etc. So see, any game can be improved upon! Otherwise, it is a fun and challenging game! Go for it!

The Top of the Tycoon Pile...for Train Lovers
Having first played the demo version of RT3, I wasn't sure what else the full version would offer...was I wrong. By adding endless variations on industry, maps, TONS of locomotive options, and a continuation of the relatively simple interface, RT3 definately meets the expectations of strategy gamers and train enthusiastics, alike. Any system built in the last 3-4 years (as of Apr 2008), will have ample computing power and memory to run the game in even enhanced graphics modes. Have a newer, hotter system? How about a system made for gaming? Then this is right up your alley! I thoroughly enjoy the strategy and planning involved in this game. You will too.

Thank goodness I didn't spend too much
The graphics are terrible, instuctions worse, thought maybe it would to be better than the original zoo tycoon. NOT A waste of money. Would not recommend this program.
