Wow! The New York Rangers win their first Stanley Cup since 1940. A fantastic box-set of all of the Rangers' last 14 games in the 1994 playoffs. The 7-game Stanley Cup Final Series against Vancouver Canucks is very good, but, before that, the Eastern Conference Final Series of New York Rangers v New Jersey Devils was sensational - that must be as good a Stanley Cup playoff series ever. I can't imagine any other series being better than that. To have all those 14 games in one DVD box set is just fab. There ought to be a '10 greatest games' box set of all NHL Original Six teams, and of other teams like New Jersey Devils, Colorado Avalanche, Anaheim Ducks/ Mighty Ducks, Dallas Stars. Neither Amazon nor ebay seem to sell anything like that, so maybe they have never been produced. If they haven't, come on NHL - videos like that would sell like hot cakes (as we say in the UK; maybe it would be like hot popcorn in north America?). Read full review

If you are a fan of the Rangers, Devils, or Canucks, or just a fan of hockey itself, you owe it to yourself to own this re-release of the 1994 Eastern Conference Finals and the Stanley Cup Series, both 7-game affairs pitting the New York Rangers against the New Jersey Devils and then the Vancouver Canucks. Never had there been so many shifts in momentum and such tight games as there were in these playoff finales. The ’94 playoffs marked a transition between new and old playing styles, as the European/Canadian influences of wide-open offense would run head on into the beginning of a new kind of defense made famous by the New Jersey Devils – the “neutral zone trap” which would stifle opponents for years to come and allow them to win 3 Stanley Cups in 10 years, along with the brilliant play of their netminder, Martin Brodeur (who makes his first playoff start against the Broadway Blueshirts). Add in complete footage of all 14 games (without commercial interruption) and the stellar commentating of Gary Thorne and Bill Clement (has there ever been a better hockey announcing team?), as well as a special DVD featuring a highlight film of the Ranger’s 1994 playoff run and the retiring of the jersey of Mark Messier, and you have a DVD set that is completely worthy of any sports fan and deserves a place in your collection. DVDs 1-7: 1994 Eastern Finals Series vs. New Jersey Devils: After absolutely destroying the Islanders and Capitals in the opening rounds, New York starts out strong here, but quickly become bogged down and frustrated by the change in tempo caused by the “neutral zone trap” defense of the Devils. Takes time for them to adjust. Hitting increases as games progress, and the older, smaller Rangers finish the 7 games actually out-hitting the Devils. This series was perhaps even more deserving of the Stanley Cup as the Devils gave the regular season champion Rangers all they could handle. It took the more experienced Rangers all 7 games and 2 double-overtimes to overcome the tenacious and efficient defense of the Devils. DVDs 8-15 Stanley Cup Finals vs. Vancouver Canucks: The looser defense of the Canucks produces an immediate effect on the Rangers as they swirl around on the more open ice and assault G Kirk Maclean with high-octane offense. Get a closeup look at Pavel Bure, the “Russian Rocket” as he just starts to hit his stride in this Stanley Cup series against the team that he would eventually call his own. Weak goaltending by the Canucks allows New York to take early control of the series in Vancouver. Up by a 3-1 margin, the Canucks show incredible heart with the inspired play of Captain Trevor Linden and forwards Ronning and Momesso by evening the series and forcing the final showdown at Madison Square Garden. And who do you think scores the game winner? One of the Top 5 greatest captains of all time in hockey history… *TIP FOR VIEWING: To fully relive the excitement of this hockey experience, be aware of the fact that each DVD case has the scoring breakdown of every game on its cover (Try covering the outside when you open it up so that you don’t see how the game you are about to watch is going to unfold…doing this will allow you to watch in suspense as each twist and turn unfolds, because believe me, this playoff run was a roller-coaster!).Read full review
