Motorola XPR VHF/UHF Mobile Radios Excellent Choices for Amateur Radio DMR
The MOTOROLA MOTOTRBO XPR 4000 and 5000 series mobile radios are very solid reliable commercial-grade pieces of equipment. They are extremely suitable for conversion to amateur radio Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) use which is the fastest growing VHF/UHF digital mode on the ham radio bands today. 1000 channels is certainly sufficient to meet the needs of any amateur but each repeater will have five or more "talk groups" each requiring a channel. The radios must be programmed using special Customer Programming Software (CPS) and a cable that can be purchased here on eBay or easily constructed using a USB cable. Pre-existing "codeplug" files can be cloned to the radio which avoids having to write each one from scratch. The downside is that the radio cannot be programmed "on the fly". Another disadvantage to some is that the radios are either VHF or UHF but a dual band version does not exist. Most of the world uses UHF dor,DMR except Southern New England and Central California. These areas use VHF because UHF use is severely impacted by high-power Air Force over-the-horizon RADAR (PAVE-PAWS) installations located at Otis AFB on Cape Cod MA and Beale AFB at Marysville in northern CA. Notwithstanding the XPR series often sell at reasonable prices and are very reliable radios for amateur use.
One of Motorola's best digital mobile radios!! This unit comes in two power options and vhf or uhf. Sorry no dual band here. I have this radio programmed with both conventional analog and digital (DMR) and I own three of them; one in each band and a XPR4580 which is the 800/900MHz version. Simply put it is a great radio
