I love monster rancher games in general, but they have not all been excellent. There are bound to be things you love and miss in this one, if you have ever played the others. If not, you could definately start out with this one... It has all the raising aspects that make the game what it is... Feeding, resting, praising, ect. The Adventuring aspect of this game seems more enjoyable than some former versions, and the battles are fun, and much like the old style, easy to pick up. Of course the coolest aspect of these games is always taking the cds and dvds you already own, and making monsters from there, this is still going strong...
I owned a copy that was damaged so I bought another one. If you have any kids or just feel like playing a low key east to understand game, this is PERFECT for you. Although it is fairly intuitive (in other words, with some time you can figure it all out), I do recommend having the instruction manual because it would save time. The character basically raises monsters but mostly they act like pets. Some of them are cute, some of them are ugly, and some of them are just fantastic looking (my favorite looks like the grim reaper). You raise the monsters as best as you can, training them to raise their stats, feed them and then allowing them to fight one another for trophies and money. There is some interesting storyline to go with as your monsters progress through the ranks. Another cool aspect is the way you get new monsters to raise - you insert CDs, PS1 and PS2 games, as well as DVDS (note - burned discs work good too) that the game reads and develops a monster from some kind of code on those discs. It takes about 50 seconds per disc for a monster to be generated, your kids can be entertained for hours just finding the 300+ different monsters. The reason why this game is the best is because of the similarity to pets. Your kid wants a parrot? I bet a rock Golem is just as finicky so load that up and see how they handle it. There's also monsters that act more like dogs and cats, plus a whole lot of other types. You'll feed, praise, or scold the monsters, nurse them back to health if they get hurt and when they get too old... I dare you not to cry when your favorite monster needs to be retired. It's a heart warming, and sometimes heartbreaking game that teaches some great real life lessons.Read full review
Since it's one of the more sought after games for the PS2 finding one at a great price as well as complete will be the real challenge but one worth doing if you look hard enough.

This is my favorite game from my childhood and I’m really glad to have it again. It’s so fun to play through the story, battle in tournaments, and generate new monsters! I definitely recommend it

Monster Rancher 3 is a lot of fun, and easy to learn. In comparison to 2, I like this one more. The pace of the game is faster, you are able to choose when to go on adventures, the competitions are more interactive and fun, and there is a storyline! You are still able to pull monsters off of CDs/DVDs, and some are locked until you get to a higher rank, or need more story development before they're unlocked. You're also able to keep more then one monster at a time, and customize the ranch much easier. Over all, it's a great game. :)
