Good image quality
I believe that the M4 is one of the best non-metered Leicas. It has the refinement of the M3 with some definite improvements. The loading, rewinding, and the PC sync connectors are all practical improvements over the M3. Also, having 35mm frame lines in the VF makes the camera more versatile. If you shoot strictly 50mm lenses, the M3 has the best finder in the M body (without metering). However, I often shoot with a 35mm so having to attach an accessory viewfinder is a bit of a nuisance.

Leica M4 camera
Solid, well built, will last longer than I will. Best in class for rangefinders. The M4 improved on the already excellent M4 by adding a fast loading system. Only down side is the lower magnification viewfinder. Rangefinder camera still have a place in modern photography. They are small, fast, quite and have excellent focus systems. I would choose a Leica M camera over a digital (any type) for street photography.
Leica M4: last of the "meter-less" M bodies
The Leica M4 was the 1960s incarnation of a dynasty that started in 1954 with the legendary M3 and still continues in 2006 with the M7 and MP variations. Once you wrap your hands around this 35mm film camera, wind the advance and click the shutter, you're at least intrigued if not thoroughly hooked. Bring the camera to your eye and peer through the viewfinder. It's like seeing through a bright window pane not the restrictive "tube" through which all SLRs force you to look. An unblimished Leica "M" should present a bright image with clearly discernable frame lines showing the actual picture area. You'll notice a small central patch which is the rangefinder patch where correct focusing is ascertained. Here are the ingredients that make the Leica M so alluring: an uncluttered design, a very seductive feel and a uniquely quiet shutter. Nikon and Canon both build fine instruments but neither equals the mystique of a clean, well-maintained Leica M-body. The M4, M4-2 and M4-P series of bodies were the last Leica M-bodies built that require NO batteries of any kind: the M4 was and is a mechanical masterpiece! VERY clean, unmarked and fully functioning bodies should sell (in 2006) for anywhere from US$750 to US$900. I sold my M4-P as part of a cash build-up to be able to acquire an M8 with which I am still wrestling (learning?).
great feeling taking photos with this black jewel...
I am glad to own again (purchase again in 2014 after I sold the previous one in 1999) this timeless LEICA M4P camera. It s a classic but not to old like the M3 or M4 ; I love it because it has all the frames from 28 to 135 in the very clear viewfinder, it is built like a tank, it is very discret and a pleasure to handle. I use it mainly with a 28mm. Don't miss the next one.
