This retrofit was very easy to install on my early version of the Zeiss Standard. It gives intense white light controllable with the provided rheostat. It was pleasing to find a USA- UK adaptor plug included. Devices like this give new life to old microscopes by offering illumination of intensity unavailable to their original users other than by potentially dangerous mercury lamps and suchlike. Hitherto, I had difficulty working with bandwidth filters, especially blue. Also, good dark ground illumination at higher powers is more easily attained. The instructions do not mention whether the LED component is replaceable when its nominal very long life time expires. One would hope so because the device whilst reasonably priced I would not regard as disposable. Anyway, I am delighted. After a short trial period my intention is to purchase further retrofits for other stands; these including a more recent Zeiss Standard, and a couple of black Leitz stands.Read full review

For users of older microscopes, the retroDIODE LED illuminator not only serves when the original light source is missing but also allows upgrading to preferable LED illumination. The 10z-II unit is "plug-and-play" in my Zeiss Standard 18 microscope and provides uniform bright white light. I need to use a neutral density filter with the 10x objective but the intensity with no attenuation is excellent for the 40x and 63x objectives.

No reason to light the fire box to enjoy one of these wonderful old stands. Bulbs are getting harder to find, and LEDs don't cook the fat off your fingers as you fumble blindly under the stage. retroDIODE will let you get many more years of service from an increasing number of classic microscopes.

This illuminator is one of several upgrades that I have made to my classic zeiss universal..The light is homogeneous in the field when viewed either through the binocular or video screen, Importantly it is precisely adjustable which was not possible with the original zeiss illuminator . I will recommend it to my students who I supply with quality older microscopes, Richard Harvey

Very well made. Useful since tungsten fittings will be difficult to find or expensive in future. I sent my measurements to Stan and he modified the fitting exactly for me. Very much brighter, although he can provide a brighter version.
