The last and best of the PIII's.
This is the end of the Pentium III line. But it's not a bad way to go. I was a bit surprised by the speed of this chip coupled with a Dell GX150. With 512mb ram and a 20gb ide hard drive running Windows XP pro, it still managed a boot up time of about 30 seconds. Response speeds seemed similar to that of today's netbooks. The 133 fsb along with the 512kb cache do make that extra difference over their celeron counterparts. At 1.4ghz it's still fast enough to serve many purposes. The only bad thing about this CPU is that due to it's short service time, compatible motherboards may be hard to find and often can cost as much as P4 boards. This would be something more for the tinker/hobbyist as far as cheap and effective cost. Those building one for around 100-200 dollars would not be hard. Running XP would still allow that to cover basic web surfing needs. I equate mine to making the best of a generation. But if you happen to have a compatible board around it's worth the small price to put one together and play around with.
Great upgrade if your prepared to mod it for your system...
The last of the Pentium 3 line, and by far the fastest, it even manages to outperform the bottom end Pentium 4 line. The only problem is that intel changed the pin outs just enough to to break compatibility with then current coppermine motherboards. But fear not there is a mod, that requires you to remove just 3 pins and bridge two across, just google "pentium 3 Tualatin mod" and follow the rabbit down the hole, there are tuns of online references that you can use to do this mod. And the end result speaks for itself, my system (733mhz Coppermine,256megs ram and geforce 256) went from 1360 3dmarks(using 3dmark2001) to well over 2300, that is a huge difference and it basically eliminated any bottle-neck the original CPU had over the GPU. So what are you waiting for...
Very convenient way to get the power of this legendary Pentium 3 processor.
I had a Coppermine socket 370, which doesn't natively support Tualatin. I had already broken a pin on another Pentium 3 CPU and tried to manually solder it back. I succeeded but it was very difficult, so I knew I did not want to try to attempt the pin mod myself.

a Great CPU for older machines needing an upgrade.
This processor will be replacing a 1.3GHz Celeron for added performance for an older computer. The objective is to use older equipment to run an online business to prove that you can use older technology and be successful. One of the barriers for some people is equipment purchases. I want to prove that you can buy older equipment on eBay and Thrift Stores and do well until you are able to fully equip your office with State-of-the-Art equipment and grow your business. This CPU purchase was made to be part of my Selling on eBay Using equipment from 2001. So if you have limited resources your can start with almost any computer and start selling.
Fasterst P3 you can get, but make sure you have the motherboard that can run it.
Best and fastest P3 CPU in existence. The bottom section contains an pin adapter layer, which makes the processor noticeably thicker. When using a standard P3 coolers you may want to loosen the metal brackets to reduce pressure and avoid damage. Make sure your chipset can run at 133MHz safely. Some 440BX boards will operate with Tualatin, but suffer instability above 112MHz. Consult motherboard documentation.
