I have read and own quite a bunch of animal drawing and painting books but this will probably be my favorite. Jack Hamm has a great way to explain similarities and differences between species (who had thougt the Giraffe and Hippo have a bunch of facialfeatures in common?). Simple steps lead to astonishing results as long as you know enough about your subject's anatomy - and this is one of the strong points about this book. Lots and lots of info about animal anatomy that really helped me. This book is not so much about drawing techniques like how to create life-like fur though he explains a lot about muscle groups and resolving shades and some light effects. Hamm compares eyes, noses, heads, feet and explains how each animal moves in detail with lots of drawings. Book contains more than a thousand step-by-step illusttrations. Elephants, big cats and horses seem to be Hamm's favaorites. I would have loved to see more about canines but that is probably just me (he covers that subject).Read full review
This is great for artists looking to perfect their animal anatomy. Many instructive art books can be tedious to learn from and contain more text than examples. When you buy a drawing book, you want to see how to draw something in pictures. This book provides that. How To Draw Animals gives a great general overview of analyzing animal shapes and how to break down an animals form to draw it. There are separate sections focusing on common animals species and sections that review drawing tips useful when drawing all animals. This is not a step by step kids learn to draw book and I would not recommend this book for smaller children wanting to learn to draw. So far this has been my favorite art book to work in.
This book is well explained and illustrated. It is my go-to book for drawing. I got this book as a child and just bought another for my grandson who is 12 - he was using mine and was doing so well with it, I felt he should have his own! It is by far the best for overall teaching I've seen - details, diagrams, proportions, perspective, musculature, etc. I recommend anyone wanted to really learn about drawing, young or old, to get and use this book, as it is well worth it.

Product is exactly what I am looking for in a sketching/drawing reference. Basic, clear, easy to follow examples without a lot of fluff.

While there are some "step by step" sections like the ones printed on the back cover, this book is mostly filled with anatomical diagrams and general notes and pointers on animal anatomy: Bones, muscles, locomotion, gestures and poses, differences between species within in animal family, etc. It's not hard to imagine an artist using this as a quick reference in a pre-internet age.
