GoodFellas (DVD, 1997)
A Martin Scorsese film - ENOUGH SAID! This is a real-life Sopranos, or Godfather style film. It is based on a true story. The actors, Henry Hill (Ray Liotta), Jimmy Conway (Robert De Niro), Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci), "Big Pauli", (Paul Sorvino) are all real people. This is a family portrait of a Mafia crew. Henry Hill is growing up in a Brooklyn neighborhood in the 1950's. His admiration goes out to the wiseguys that are all around. They have money, clothes, nice cars, and everything that he doesn't have. He starts hanging around and eventually becomes a runner and errand boy for the gangsters. At fourteen he is making more than his dad who eventually kicked him out. He grew up in the "life" and was trusted and respected by the other wiseguys. At 15 he meets Tommy DeVito and they become best friends, selling cartons of stolen cigarettes, and stealing. Henry makes his bones when he gets busted by the cops, but keeps his mouth shut. He wouldn't say anything or give anyone up. He is recognized by the boss, "Big Paulie Castellano", as a stand-up guy and from this time on, is a trusted insider. Henry teams up with Jimmy Conway (De Niro) and Tommy, and they become a first class hijack crew, stealing everything; suits, furs, cars, cigarettes, cigars, lobsters, etc. Their biggest heist was from the Air France security room at LaGuardia Airport, where they stole more than $1M cash over the Labor Day weekend holiday in 1966. Eventually Henry got caught and went to prison. He got hooked on drugs while there and never really got straight afterwards. His drug use and numerous affairs stresses his marriage, and his relationship with his adoptive "Family". Afraid that he has become too much of a liability to his family, and facing numerous charges under a RICOH case, Henry decides to turn informant. He testified against many of the wiseguys on the inside and many people went to prison for a lot of years. Henry Hill entered the Witness Relocation Program. This is a long movie, but it is a riveting view from the inside of a crime family. The callous actions, and coldblooded murders committed by Jimmy Canway and Tommy DeVito are shown. These people were out of control. This movie has a great soundtrack of 1950's, 60's, and 1970's pop music. All of the performances in this movie are top-notch! You will watch this film over and over.
